North Vancouver

Trident Navigation is seeking an experienced marine professional to lead the day-to-day operation of our tug fleet and support the Masters and crews who run it. This role combines Port Captain responsibilities, fleet operations, and mariner leadership, with regular time aboard vessels, at terminals, and alongside crews.

Whether your background is as a Port Captain, Marine Superintendent, Tug Master, or another marine operations leader, we’re interested in the practical experience and leadership you can bring to our team.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will help ensure our vessels and crews are ready for work, operations run safely and efficiently, and Trident’s safety management practices are followed across the fleet. This is a hands-on position that combines field leadership with office time for planning, documentation, and coordination.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations and Port Captain Duties

- Oversee daily tug and barge operations, working closely with dispatch, Masters, and the shore team to meet customer requirements.
- Monitor vessel readiness, crew availability, and operational constraints, helping resolve issues aboard vessels and in the field.
- Visit vessels, terminals, and job sites regularly to support crews, review operating practices, and assess performance.
- Coordinate with maintenance and terminal personnel on repairs, vessel availability, and operational priorities.
- Support voyage planning and preparation for complex or unusual towing, barge movements, and marine transportation work.

Mariner Leadership and Crew Support

- Provide practical leadership, coaching,

and support to tug Masters and crew members.
- Help ensure crews have the qualifications, training, and vessel familiarization required for their assignments.
- Participate in crew onboarding, performance discussions, and ongoing development.
- Promote clear communication and coordination between vessel crews, dispatch, and shore management.
- Build strong relationships with mariners while setting clear expectations for safe, reliable operations.

Marine Safety and Compliance

- Lead the consistent application of Trident’s Safety Management System across tug operations.
- Conduct vessel visits, safety observations, toolbox talks, and operational reviews.
- Support audits, inspections, incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.
- Work with the Designated Person and shore management team to address safety concerns raised by crews.
- Help ensure operations comply with applicable Transport Canada requirements, company procedures, and industry standards.
- Apply practical knowledge of marine safety management and ISM principles to daily operations.

Qualifications

- Significant experience in tug and barge operations, with a background as a Port Captain, Marine Superintendent, Tug Master, Captain, or similar marine operations leader.

- Experienced tug Masters interested in moving into a shore-based leadership role are encouraged to apply.
- Strong practical knowledge of towing, barge handling, seamanship, and crew coordination, ideally within British Columbia.
- Experience working with a marine Safety Management System; familiarity with the ISM Code is a strong asset.
- Working knowledge of applicable Transport Canada requirements and marine occupational health and safety practices.
- Ability to earn the trust of experienced mariners, communicate clear expectations, and address operational, performance, or safety concerns.
- Strong judgment, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Relevant Transport Canada certification and sea-going experience are robust assets.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to vessels, terminals, and job sites as needed.
- Flexibility to respond to operational issues outside regular office hours when required.
