This position plays an important role in promoting a safe and positive transportation experience for students, drivers, and families. The Bus Monitor observes, communicates, and documents findings, reporting any concerns to the driver or dispatch.
Important: This is a strictly hands-off position. Bus Monitors do not touch, physically assist, or discipline students. Any concerns requiring intervention must be communicated to the driver or dispatch.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Safety and Procedure Monitoring

- Observe student loading and unloading procedures at each stop, including the proper use of red warning lights and ensuring students are clear of the bus before it moves.
- Monitor safe driving practices, including appropriate speed, following distance, and complete stops at railway crossings.
- Verify that drivers follow assigned routes, designated stops, and scheduled times.
- Confirm that drivers complete the required child check at the end of every run by walking to the rear of the bus and checking every seat.
- Observe how drivers manage student behaviour and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete an observation report for each assigned run, including the date, route, bus number, driver name, observations, and any concerns.
- Immediately bring missed safety procedures to the driver's attention and report concerns to dispatch.
- Submit completed observation reports to the designated supervisor on the same day.
- Document positive driver performance and recognize good safety practices.
- Identify and report damaged seat belts, seats, or other bus equipment to dispatch.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student, family, and employee information.
Emergency Preparedness
- Understand and follow Golden Arrow's school bus evacuation procedures.
- Participate in required emergency and evacuation drills.
- During an emergency, follow the direction of the driver and dispatch, provide verbal guidance to students, and contact 911 when necessary.
