Golden Arrow (Canada)

Edmonton

Golden Arrow is seeking three dependable, organized, and approachable individuals to join our team as Yard Gatekeepers, with one position assigned to each of our three school bus yards.

- South Yard: 3052 84 Avenue, Edmonton, AB
- North Yard: 5660 Sherin Road, Edmonton, AB
- West Yard: 20204 111 Avenue, Edmonton, AB

The Yard Gatekeeper plays an essential role in maintaining a safe and organized yard environment while supporting our drivers throughout the school day.

As the primary safety checkpoint at the yard entrance, the Yard Gatekeeper is responsible for confirming that required child checks are completed before buses leave the yard and after they return. No bus leaves the yard without a completed child check, and no bus is parked for the day until the post-trip child check has been confirmed.

In addition to monitoring child checks, the Yard Gatekeeper serves as an important point of contact for drivers, greeting them at the beginning and end of their shifts, listening to concerns, documenting conversations, and ensuring information is passed along to the appropriate department.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, is highly organized, and takes pride in helping maintain a safe transportation environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Driver Engagement and Communication

- Greet drivers during morning pull-out and afternoon return.
- Check in with drivers and provide an chance for them to share concerns regarding routes, students, bus conditions, schedules, or other work-related matters.
- Maintain an accurate log of every driver conversation, including the date, time, driver name, bus number, discussion details, required follow-up, and person notified.
- Communicate concerns to the appropriate department, including dispatch, maintenance, supervisors, or Human Resources, during the same shift.
- Track follow-up items to ensure concerns are addressed and do not get overlooked.
- Communicate important updates from dispatch and management, including route changes, weather-related plans, and policy reminders.
- Remain alert to signs that a driver may be unfit to operate a vehicle due to illness, fatigue, or possible impairment, and immediately report concerns to the designated supervisor or dispatch.

2. Child Check Monitoring and Verification

Child safety is the highest priority of this position. The Yard Gatekeeper is responsible for confirming that required child checks are completed on every bus, every shift.

- Verify that drivers complete the required child check before leaving the yard and again after returning from their route, in accordance with Golden Arrow's Child Check procedures.

- Confirm that returning drivers physically walk to the rear of the bus and inspect every seat before the bus is parked.
- Maintain an accurate record of each child check, including bus number, driver name, AM or PM run, time completed, and confirmation of completion.
- Ensure that any missed or incomplete child check is addressed immediately. A bus must not be cleared for parking until the required check has been completed.
- Immediately report missed or incomplete child checks to the designated supervisor.
- If a child is discovered on board, remain with the child, contact dispatch immediately, and follow Golden Arrow's Child Check and emergency procedures.

3. Gate and Yard Safety

- Maintain a log of all non-bus traffic entering and leaving the yard, including employee vehicles, visitors, contractors, deliveries, and tow trucks.
- Help maintain safe traffic flow during morning bus departures and afternoon returns.
- Monitor yard conditions and report potential hazards, including ice, poor lighting, damaged fencing, spills, and other safety concerns.
- Shovel and apply sand to walkways and designated areas as needed to maintain safe access.
- Ensure visitors and contractors are accounted for while on the property.

4. Reporting and Administration

- Complete and submit driver conversation logs and child check records to the designated supervisor at the end of each morning and afternoon shift.
- Immediately communicate urgent safety concerns rather than waiting until the end of the shift.
- Maintain regular communication with dispatch and the maintenance department using the designated radio, phone, or tablet.
- Ensure all records are accurate, organized, and submitted on time.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding driver, student, and company information.
