Tunnel Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Tunnel Engineer to support the delivery of complex underground infrastructure projects from design through to construction and completion. This role will involve working closely with multidisciplinary teams, site personnel, contractors and technical specialists to ensure that tunnelling works are planned, coordinated and delivered safely, efficiently and to the required standards.

Key responsibilities

- Develop and review tunnel designs, construction methodologies, temporary works and associated technical documentation.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including resolving technical queries and assessing design changes.
- Monitor tunnelling activities, excavation sequences, ground conditions, lining works and the installation of support systems.
- Review contractor submissions, method statements, inspection records and quality documentation.
- Assist with risk assessments, constructability reviews and the management of health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, civil, rail, mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.
- Contribute to programme updates, progress reporting, cost control and the close-out of technical issues.
- Support site investigations, surveys, inspections and the interpretation of monitoring data.

About you

You will have a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience in tunnelling, underground construction or major infrastructure projects. A sound understanding of tunnel excavation methods, temporary works, sprayed concrete lining, segmental lining and ground support systems is highly desirable.

You should be confident interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and technical standards, with solid analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience using relevant design, modelling or project management software would be advantageous. Professional registration, or active progress towards professional accreditation, is welcomed.

What we offer

This is an opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects while developing your expertise within a collaborative engineering environment. You will receive support for professional development and be encouraged to take an active role in improving processes, technical delivery and project outcomes. The role may involve regular site attendance and occasional travel, depending on project requirements.
