Hardware Safety Engineer
Job Description
The Hardware Safety Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the safety and reliability of complex electromechanical systems with significant software components, particularly in advanced space robotics and related applications. This position focuses on performing detailed safety and hazard analyses, guiding design teams on safety-critical requirements, and contributing to system-level safety documentation throughout the entire program lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive safety and hazard assessments and analyses for projects involving complex electromechanical systems with substantial software components. Work proactively with design, systems engineering, and software teams to ensure safety-related requirements are clearly defined, properly implemented, and effectively verified in the system design. Participate in milestone safety reviews with internal stakeholders and external customers, presenting findings, recommendations, and safety assurance evidence.
Carry out safety and reliability tasks such as Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and contribute to System Safety Analysis Reports and other safety documentation. Review subcontractor safety analyses and FMEAs, providing constructive feedback and ensuring alignment with program safety standards and requirements. Lead and mentor junior Safety & Mission Assurance personnel, providing technical guidance, coaching, and support to develop their expertise in hardware and system safety.
Own safety project schedules, milestones, and deliverables, ensuring safety activities are planned, tracked, and completed on time and to a high standard of quality.
Identify and implement process improvements that enhance quality, productivity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness within Safety & Mission Assurance activities. Support proposals and customer and subcontractor contract negotiations from a safety and mission assurance perspective, contributing to safety requirements and risk assessments.
Engage across all phases of the program, including design, development, procurement, assembly, integration, test, qualification, delivery, and operational support, to maintain a consistent safety focus. Collaborate closely with internal program managers and engineering teams, as well as external government partners, to communicate safety risks, mitigation strategies, and compliance with safety standards.
Essential Skills Proven experience analyzing hardware system hazards and safety-related artifacts for complex electromechanical systems. Hands-on experience performing and interpreting FMEAs and conducting hardware safety analyses to identify and mitigate safety-critical risks. Strong understanding of hardware components, circuit boards, and system architectures, including how specific parts can cause safety-critical hazards.
Ability to analyze redundancy, tolerance, and safety-critical hardware systems to ensure robust fault tolerance and safe system behavior. Knowledge of functional safety principles and software safety in safety-critical environments.
Familiarity with safety-critical systems involving VHDL, firmware, and real-time embedded systems. Experience working with continuous integration environments in support of safety-critical software and hardware development.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate safety findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Demonstrated capability to lead safety activities, manage safety-related schedules and deliverables, and mentor junior safety and mission assurance staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Functional safety experience in the satellite or space industry is highly desirable. Background in safety-critical systems for robotics or complex electromechanical platforms is an asset.
Experience contributing to System Safety Analysis Reports and performing Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is beneficial. Exposure to advanced robotics applications in domains such as nuclear, medical, industrial, or mining environments is an advantage. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills with attention to detail in safety and reliability work products.
Work Workplace
This role operates within a collaborative, collegial engineering environment where teams actively support peer review and shared problem-solving across programs. Regular
