Heavy Equipment Technician
Full-Time | Shop & Field Service | Acheson, Alberta
Wage: $35–$52 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
About DMR Diesel Ltd.
DMR Diesel Ltd. is an established, Aboriginal-owned heavy equipment repair and service company based in Acheson, Alberta. Since opening in 2007, we have built our business around quality workmanship, dependable service, and long-standing customer relationships.
We work across a wide range of industries, including transportation, construction, oilfield, forestry, and railway. Our services cover everything from on-highway trucks and trailers to off-highway equipment, railway maintenance machinery, hydraulic components, diesel engine repairs, and specialized industrial equipment.
We are not a one-brand or one-type-of-equipment shop. Our technicians have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of machinery, systems, and repair challenges.
We are looking for a motivated and capable Heavy Equipment Technician to join our team. Whether you're an experienced Journeyman or a strong third- or fourth-year apprentice, we're interested in someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys troubleshooting, and is comfortable taking ownership of a job.
The Position – Shop & Field Service
This position offers a genuine combination of shop-based work and mobile field service.
In the shop, you'll work on everything from routine maintenance and inspections to complex diagnostics, component repairs, and complete engine or equipment overhauls.
In the field, you'll operate a fully equipped service truck and travel to customer locations, equipment yards, and project sites to perform maintenance and repairs on equipment where it works.
Our field service work is primarily day trips, with technicians generally home at the end of the workday. Overnight travel is occasionally required depending on customer needs and the nature of the job, but extended periods away from home are not the norm.
We believe in providing our technicians with a wide-ranging workload while maintaining a reasonable balance between work and home life.
What You'll Be Doing
- Diagnosing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic,
and diesel engine systems.
- Performing engine repairs, in-frame and out-of-frame overhauls, and component rebuilds.
- Repairing and maintaining on-highway trucks, truck tractors, and commercial trailers.
- Servicing off-highway equipment, including loaders, dozers, excavators, and other heavy machinery.
- Working on railway maintenance equipment and specialized rail machinery.
- Performing hydraulic component, cylinder, driveline, brake, suspension, and electrical repairs.
- Completing preventative maintenance, fleet servicing, and annual inspections.
- Diagnosing equipment failures and developing practical repair solutions.
- Preparing repair estimates, quotes, and detailed repair documentation.
- Performing mobile service calls at customer locations and construction or industrial project sites.
- Operating and maintaining a company service truck.
- Maintaining accurate service records, inspection reports, and driver logbooks.
- Working safely and maintaining an organized shop and work environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician (on-highway, off-highway, or both), or a third- or fourth-year apprentice.
- Experienced Heavy Duty Mechanics or Diesel Technicians with a minimum of three years of relevant heavy equipment experience may also be considered.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and take responsibility for assigned repairs.
- Willingness to work on a variety of equipment and take on new challenges.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers and coworkers.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a clean driving record.
- Personal hand tools sufficient to perform most repair tasks, including tooling up to 3/4".
- CVIP licence, or the ability to obtain one, is considered an asset.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive wages of $35–$52 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
- Full-time, permanent employment.
- Extended health care benefits.
- Dental care benefits.
- A diverse workload with opportunities to expand your mechanical experience.
- A combination of shop and field service work.
- Primarily day-trip field assignments, with technicians generally returning home at the end of the workday.
What We're Looking For
At DMR, we understand that being a good mechanic involves more than simply turning wrenches. We value technicians who can diagnose problems, think through challenges, take initiative, and see a repair through from start to finish.
We appreciate people who take pride in their workmanship, communicate effectively, and understand the importance of keeping our customers' equipment operating.
You don't need to know everything, and nobody does. What matters is having a solid mechanical foundation, a willingness to learn, the ability to ask questions when needed, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges.
Our workload is diverse, and we want people who enjoy that variety rather than being limited to one particular make, model, or type of equipment.
