Eco Guardian
Aurora
Do you know what it really costs to make a product?
At Eco Guardian, we make certified compostable foodservice packaging that helps keep single-use plastic out of landfills and oceans. We recently opened our own production and warehouse facility in Aurora, and we’re looking for a Controller who knows a plant from the inside: the presses, the bills of materials, the scrap bin, and the cost of an hour of downtime.
Purpose of the Role
As Controller, you’ll give our leadership a clear, reliable picture of the company’s financial health and turn it into direction. Now that we manufacture in-house, knowing what our products truly cost shapes every major decision we make about pricing, sourcing, capacity, and growth. You’ll be the person who connects the numbers on the page to what’s happening on the production floor, and your work will directly help keep sustainable packaging competitive and profitable.
What You’ll Do
Lead manufacturing finance
- Provide direction to our Cost Accountant on standard costs, bills of materials, variance analysis, and inventory valuation, and approve cost updates before release in SAP Business One
- Interpret production KPIs such as cost per unit, line efficiency, scrap, and downtime cost to guide decisions on capacity, staffing, and capital investment
- Build business cases and ROI analysis for new equipment, capacity expansion, and new product lines
- Spend regular time on the production and warehouse floor, because valuable cost decisions start with seeing how the work actually gets done
- Support the setup and control of our manufacturing systems as the facility grows
Guide pricing and margins
- Set pricing guidelines and margin thresholds, and approve quotes, discounts, and special pricing
- Use landed cost data on imported products to inform sourcing and make-or-buy decisions
- Find savings in freight, customs duties, third-party warehousing, and accounts payable
Run a strong finance function
- Lead and mentor a team that includes an Accounting Manager, Business Analyst, Cost Accountant, and our AP/AR staff
- Own month-end close, financial reporting, budgets, and forecasts for the President & CEO
- Establish and maintain internal controls, and oversee AP, AR, HST reporting, payroll balancing, and bank reconciliations
- Take on strategic projects such as banking relationships, financing, covenant management, and government grants
What You Bring
- CPA designation (a legacy CMA or CA background is an asset)
- University degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading and coaching a team
- At least 5 years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment (this is essential)
- Experience with landed cost and imported goods, ideally ocean freight from Asia
- Proficiency in SAP Business One
- The ability to explain financial information clearly to people who don’t speak “finance”
- Flexibility to work outside regular hours during month-end, year-end, audits, and inventory counts
Why Eco Guardian
- Your work directly shapes the direction of a growing, mission-driven manufacturer
- You’ll report directly to the President & CEO and have a real seat at the table
- You’ll help build the cost and control framework for a new facility, rather than inherit someone else’s
- You’ll be part of a team committed to protecting the environment
