Typically, the "Trainee" technician period is about 2 years in duration. You will be assisting other technicians mainly with testing of systems. While in the trainee period, you can sign up for and progress through the 5 x CFAA (canadian fire alarm association) courses and gain experience, knowledge, and schooling over the first 2 years. After 2 years you can write the CFAA practical and theoretically exams to become a fully licensed (but Junior) technician. Once you become fully licensed, the position normally provides a company vehicle, on-call roster, and the ability to perform more solo or "lead" work. After a couple years as a Junior technician you can progress into intermediate and senior roles.
The fire alarm industry is very stable in that all the work is mandated by code and insurance, there is no option to not perform the testing and repairs. As such, there are no real slowdowns and the wages rise fairly quickly and steadily. You will be doing work that directly impacts the life safety of the building residents and occupants.
In this trade there is no formal apprenticeship, the courses are online / mail order. As such, you can progress to a full trade license quicker than trades such as an electrician or plumber.
