Job Summary

Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) & Uniform Tactical Security Guard

We are currently hiring for two separate security positions:

1. Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer (LPO)
2. Uniform Tactical Security Guard

Although both positions operate within the retail security and loss prevention environment, these are two very different roles with different responsibilities, expectations, and required skill sets.

Applicants may be considered for one or both positions depending on their experience, qualifications, training, and suitability.

Position 1 – Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer (LPO)

The Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer works covertly within a retail environment and is primarily responsible for identifying, observing, and apprehending individuals involved in theft.

This position requires a high level of observation, patience, judgment, and knowledge of proper loss prevention procedures. The LPO must be able to blend into the retail workplace while maintaining awareness of customer activity.

LPO Responsibilities

- Conduct covert floor surveillance to identify theft and other suspicious activity.
- Observe individuals suspected of shoplifting while maintaining continuous observation when required.
- Ensure that all required elements of an apprehension have been established before making a stop.
- Conduct lawful apprehensions in accordance with company policy, client procedures, and applicable laws.
- Maintain professionalism when dealing with accused persons, customers, employees, and members of the public.
- Use appropriate verbal communication and de-escalation techniques during apprehensions and other incidents.
- Contact and cooperate with police when required.
- Preserve evidence and accurately document incidents.
- Complete detailed apprehension, incident, and end-of-shift reports.
- Identify recurring theft methods, individuals, and patterns and communicate relevant information to management.
- Follow all company and client-specific Loss Prevention policies and procedures.

LPO Qualifications

- Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence.
- Previous retail Loss Prevention experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of lawful apprehension procedures and the required steps before making an arrest.
- Excellent observation and situational-awareness skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare detailed and accurate reports.
- Strong conflict-resolution and de-escalation skills.

- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Professional, patient, discreet, and confident.
- Must understand the importance of maintaining continuous observation and following established apprehension procedures.

Position 2 – Uniform Tactical Security Guard

The Uniform Tactical Security Guard performs a highly visible security and deterrence role.

Unlike the Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer, the Tactical Guard is not working covertly. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a professional and visible security presence, deter theft and unwanted behaviour, assist with maintaining order, and respond appropriately to security and safety concerns.

The Tactical Guard must be approachable and qualified while also being confident and capable of dealing with challenging situations.

Tactical Security Guard Responsibilities

- Maintain a professional and highly visible security presence.
- Conduct regular patrols of assigned areas.
- Act as a visual deterrent to theft, trespassing, aggressive behaviour, and other unwanted activity.
- Observe and report suspicious or concerning behaviour.
- Respond to disturbances, security incidents, emergencies, and requests for assistance.
- Use professional communication and de-escalation techniques when dealing with difficult or confrontational individuals.
- Assist store management and employees with security-related situations when appropriate.
- Monitor entrances, exits, and other assigned areas as required.
- Assist with access control and restricted areas where applicable.
- Contact police, fire, EMS, or other emergency services when required.
- Complete accurate incident reports and daily activity reports.
- Follow all site-specific Post Orders, company policies, and client procedures.
- Maintain a professional uniform and appearance throughout the entire shift.

Tactical Security Guard Qualifications

- Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence.
- Previous security experience is preferred.
- Tactical security, retail security, or high-profile security experience is considered an asset.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent conflict-resolution and de-escalation abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during confrontational situations.
- Strong situational awareness.
- Ability to follow Post Orders and instructions from supervisors and client representatives.
- Physically capable of standing, walking, and patrolling for extended periods.
- Dependable, punctual, professional, and team-oriented.

Important – These Are Two Different Roles

Applicants must understand that Plain Clothes Loss Prevention and Uniform Tactical Security are not the same position.

A Plain Clothes Loss Prevention Officer works covertly and focuses primarily on detecting theft, maintaining proper observation, and conducting lawful apprehensions when all required elements have been established.

A Uniform Tactical Security Guard works in uniform and provides a visible security presence focused primarily on deterrence, safety, maintaining order, responding to incidents, and assisting with security-related concerns.

The training, responsibilities, and expectations for each position are different.

Depending on operational requirements and the applicant's qualifications, an employee may be trained and scheduled for one position or both positions. However, employees will be expected to understand which role they are performing during each assigned shift and follow the policies and procedures applicable to that specific position.

General Requirements

Candidates for either position must:

- Hold a valid Ontario Security Guard Licence.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, reliability, and good judgment.
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Be capable of completing professional security and incident reports.
- Be willing to follow company policies, client procedures, and site-specific Post Orders.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
- Be available for flexible scheduling, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays where required.

If you are professional, dependable, observant, and interested in developing your career in Loss Prevention or Tactical Security, we encourage you to apply.

Join our security team and help us provide professional, reliable, and effective security services to our clients.
