About Yard Dawgs
We're a Calgary-born residential weed control and fertilization company with 12,000+ customers, 5K+ Google reviews and 8 markets across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, launching in Boise, Idaho in 2027. We run a centralized call centre, a fleet of 30 trucks and a growing team of 40 to 50 people. We already use AI agents for sales audits, AR, email and call scoring. Our goal is simple: be the most technologically advanced lawn care company in the world.
Our core values are A.C.E.: Accountability (find solutions, not excuses), Customer Obsessed (every customer, every visit) and Excellence (if it's worth doing, do it right the first time).
Role
Head of Technology, reporting directly to the founders.
Mission: build our own proprietary operations platform, and make Yard Dawgs the most technologically advanced lawn care company in the world.
Core purpose: you own everything tech at Yard Dawgs. That means building our new platform (customers, lawn care programs, pricing, scheduling, routing and dispatch, a technician mobile app, billing and payments, reporting), running our AI agents and automations, and keeping our day-to-day IT running. If it plugs in, logs in or runs on code, it's yours.
We want someone fanatically obsessed with AI: you follow every new model and tool release, build with Claude Code or similar every day, and you're the person everyone calls when anything tech breaks.
Responsibilities
Daily:
- Build and ship platform features using AI coding tools, with tests and code review on everything that touches money.
- Solve any technology issue the team hits: logins, devices, phones, software, network.
- Watch system health, errors and backups, and fix problems before staff notice.
Weekly:
- Demo platform progress to the founders and agree on next priorities.
- Spend time with CSRs, technicians and managers to find where they lose time, then fix it with software or AI.
- Review and improve our AI agents (sales audit, AR, email, call scoring) and dashboards.
- Test new AI releases and bring in the ones that make us faster.
- Set up and remove staff accounts, devices and access in Google Workspace and our other tools.
Monthly:
- Reconcile the platform's data: customers, balances, revenue and AR must be accurate to the penny.
- Run a security and access review, and test a backup restore.
- Report on technology costs, savings and the platform timeline.
Results
- By February 1, 2027: the first version of the platform is live and in use by our team, with customers, programs, pricing, scheduling and billing working on real data.
- Within 6 months: routing, the technician app and payments are working, and every number reconciles to the penny.
- By the 2027 off-season: the platform fully runs our operations, with zero lost customers or payments.
- 95% of tech issues resolved within one business day.
- AI agents and automations save the team at least 20 hours per week by the end of year one.
- Zero security incidents and a successful backup restore test every month.
Requirements
- 5+ years building production software, including owning a system end to end, not just contributing to one.
- You've built something that handles money: payments, billing, subscriptions or a ledger, done safely (no double charges, no stored card numbers).
- Strong in TypeScript, React or Next.js, Node.js and PostgreSQL, plus cloud hosting (AWS or similar).
- Daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor or similar) and LLM APIs,
with links to things you've shipped.
- Comfortable with internal IT: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, device management, MFA and access control.
- You've built a CRM or field service platform for a trades, home services or blue-collar business (new and existing customers, payments, scheduling and dispatch), or you've worked in the field and know how techs actually work.
- Bonus: you've migrated a business off a legacy system.
- You can talk to a lawn tech, a CSR and the owner in plain language. You'll spend a day on a truck during hiring.
- You live our values: Accountability, Customer Obsessed and Excellence. You're hungry, ambitious and take full ownership without being told what to do.
Pay and Perks
- Starts as a 3-month contract at the full base rate, then converts to permanent full-time.
- $180,000 to $200,000 base salary.
- $40,000 to $60,000 launch bonus tied to a clean platform go-live.
- Benefits.
- Direct line to the founders and a real seat at the leadership table.
- Freedom to choose your tools and build something that sets the standard for an entire industry.
- A fast-growing company targeting $25M in revenue by 2030, with room to build a tech team as we grow.
