About Applied Systems Technologies
Applied Systems Technologies Inc. is a commercial HVAC and mechanical contractor serving customers throughout Ontario. We are looking for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead and continuously improve our health and safety program across our office, service operations and construction/project sites.
This is a hands-on leadership position. We are looking for someone who is comfortable being in the field, working directly with technicians and supervisors, while also maintaining the systems, documentation, training and regulatory requirements required of a strong health and safety program.
The Role
The Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management and ongoing development of Applied's occupational health and safety program.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior management, supervisors, project teams, service technicians, the Joint Health & Safety Committee and other employees to identify hazards, improve safe-work practices and maintain compliance across the organization.
This role requires someone who can balance field presence, practical problem solving, documentation and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and continuously improve the company's Occupational Health & Safety Management System.
- Maintain compliance with Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable regulations.
- Conduct regular field inspections, workplace audits and hazard assessments across construction and service operations.
- Lead and/or coordinate workplace incident, injury, near-miss and hazard investigations.
- Track corrective actions and follow through with supervisors and employees to ensure identified issues are properly addressed.
- Support supervisors with their health and safety responsibilities and provide practical guidance on safe work practices.
- Coordinate safety orientation, employee training and ongoing safety communication.
- Maintain employee training, certification and safety records.
- Work closely with the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) and support inspections, meetings, recommendations and follow-up activities.
- Review incident and safety trends and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Manage WSIB-related reporting and return-to-work coordination.
- Manage contractor/customer safety pre-qualification and compliance requirements.
- Support customer safety portals and contractor compliance systems.
- Maintain and update company health and safety policies, procedures, forms and programs.
- Lead toolbox talks, safety meetings and other safety initiatives when required.
- Participate in management discussions surrounding health and safety performance, risk and continuous improvement.
- Stay current with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements affecting commercial HVAC, mechanical service and construction work.
- Manage and maintain customer safety compliance platforms, including ISN and other client-specific contractor prequalification systems, ensuring all documentation, certifications, and safety requirements remain current and compliant.
These responsibilities align closely with Applied's existing OHSMS, which specifically assigns the safety function responsibility for identifying hazards, assisting with controls, following up on corrective actions and reviewing completed hazard reports for further improvements.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with a combination of formal safety education and practical construction or industrial field experience.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Post-secondary education, diploma or certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant occupational health and safety experience, preferably within construction, mechanical contracting, HVAC, industrial service or a related trade environment.
- Strong working knowledge of Ontario OHSA and applicable construction regulations.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, workplace inspections, hazard assessments and corrective-action follow-up.
- Experience working with field technicians, tradespeople, supervisors and project management teams.
- Experience with WSIB reporting and return-to-work processes.
- Strong understanding of training and certification tracking.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of the company's health and safety program.
- Valid Ontario driver's license and ability to travel to job sites.
Robust Assets
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation.
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation.
- JHSC certification.
- COR program/auditing experience.
- Working at Heights.
- First Aid/CPR.
- WHMIS.
- Experience with commercial HVAC or mechanical contracting.
What We're Looking For
The right person for this role will not simply administer a safety program.
We want someone who can own it.
You should be comfortable walking into a mechanical room or construction site, speaking with technicians and supervisors, identifying issues and finding practical solutions. At the same time, you need to be organized enough to manage documentation, training records, investigations, compliance requirements and follow-up.
We are looking for someone who is approachable and practical but also confident enough to hold people accountable when required.
Why Join Applied?
This is an opportunity to take a leadership role in the continued development of Applied's health and safety program.
You will work directly with management and field operations and have the opportunity to make meaningful improvements to the systems, practices and culture that keep our employees safe.
Applied's own OHSMS describes a strong commitment to employee health and safety and specifically incorporates health and safety responsibilities into employee accountability and annual performance evaluation.
