Job title: Recovery Coach

Position Summary

The Recovery Coach walks alongside residents who choose support with recovery, healing and wellness. Through trusted relationships, one-to-one coaching and practical help, the coach supports resident-defined goals and connects people with cultural, health, housing, treatment and community resources. The work follows NiGiNan’s Indigenous-Led Recovery Model, Four Natural Laws of Kindness, Honesty, Sharing and Strength, and commitment to meet people where they are at while helping them move toward the future they choose.

Key Responsibilities:

· Build consistent, respectful relationships through a visible presence at the assigned site, drop-in conversations, appointments and warm introductions. Make support available without requiring a formal referral.

· Listen to residents’ hopes, strengths and concerns; use recovery coaching skills to explore readiness, choices, barriers and achievable next steps. Co-create and revisit voluntary, individualized recovery and wellness goals.

· Support multiple pathways, including cultural connection and ceremony, mutual aid, treatment, medication-supported care, reduced or discontinued substance use, family and/or community connection, education, purpose and peer leadership, as defined by the resident.

· Help residents navigate services, make warm referrals and, where appropriate, accompany them to the first contact. Maintain contact through treatment, hospitalization, return to use and housing transitions when the resident wishes.

· Work with residents and colleagues to offer small gatherings, recovery conversations, peer activities and other opportunities identified by residents. Seek guidance from the Cultural Team and Knowledge Keepers for teachings and ceremony.

· Coordinate with housing, health, cultural, shelter,

PDD and community partners while respecting each team’s role. Share only information needed for care and safety, with resident consent except where disclosure is required by law or immediate safety duties.

· Keep concise, accurate records of contacts, resident-directed goals, follow-up and referrals in approved systems. Gather feedback on access and usefulness without treating abstinence or participation as the sole measure of progress.

· Attend Recovery Committee meetings, reflective practice, training and case coordination. Contribute site learning, identify service gaps and carry out common approaches agreed through the committee and approved by Housing leadership.

· Follow NiGiNan safety procedures; recognize when clinical, crisis or emergency support is needed and connect the resident promptly to the responsible service.

Qualifications and abilities

· Recovery Coach Foundations training completed or willingness and ability to complete it as part of transition into the role.

· Experience in peer support, wellness, housing, community support or related work, with strong relationship building and nonjudgmental listening skills.

· Understanding of Indigenous-led, trauma-aware and harm reduction approaches, multiple pathways to recovery, resident choice and professional boundaries.

· Ability to work across teams, document clearly,

protect confidentiality and respond appropriately to safety concerns.

· Knowledge of local treatment, health, cultural and community supports, or willingness to learn. Indigenous knowledge, community connection and relevant lived expertise are assets and will be valued appropriately.

· If a candidate chooses to draw on their own lived experiences as part of their peer support practice, they should have at least 18 months of being in recovery and be ready to use that experience with appropriate boundaries and supervision. Candidates are not required to disclose a personal history of lived experience to qualify for the Recovery Coach role.

Benefits:

· Health Benefits: Access to health insurance coverage, including medical, dental, and vision plans

· Indigenous Cultural Awareness: Access to ongoing cultural supports and paid ceremonial leave

· Meaningful Work: The satisfaction of making a positive impact on Indigenous communities by addressing the housing needs of Indigenous populations and working towards social justice.

· Community Engagement: The ability to engage directly with Indigenous communities, build relationships, and witness the positive outcomes of the agency's housing programs and initiatives.
