The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a full-time, probationary (tenure-track) position in Quantum Science at the Assistant Professor level. Exceptional applicants at the Associate Professor level will also be considered. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2027, or at a mutually agreed-upon date. The department seeks a promising scholar who demonstrates a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research.
We seek a theoretical, experimental, and/or computational physicist whose research addresses phenomena requiring a genuinely quantum mechanical description. This includes fields where quantum coherence, entanglement, squeezing, or strong correlations are essential, and where quantum control, measurement, or sensing at the level of few quanta or individual quantum systems plays a central role. Applicants should explain in their research statement why a quantum mechanical description is essential to their work, and include an outline of the equipment, computing, and personnel resources their research program will require. Emphasis will be placed on candidates whose research program complements the department's existing strengths.
The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related discipline, alongside relevant post-doctoral experience. They will demonstrate a track record of high-quality scholarly research leading to peer-reviewed publications, as well as the potential to establish an independent, innovative, and externally fundable research program. Additionally,
applicants must show strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions and clear evidence of the ability to work effectively in a collaborative workplace. Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching in physics, graduate supervision, research, the establishment of an externally funded research program, and service-related activities.
The department comprises 22 full-time faculty members and 2 instructors. We offer Honours, Major, and joint Honours programs at the undergraduate level, and thesis-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs at the graduate level. Research within the department is enhanced by robust, collaborative links across the University of Manitoba, including the Departments of Computer Science, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and the Faculty of Engineering.
