Full Job DescriptionOverview

SCPC LAW is an Ottawa-based law firm seeking a motivated and experienced Family Lawyer to join our practice on a part-time basis.

We are looking for a lawyer with 1–3 years of family law experience who is comfortable managing files, communicating directly with clients, drafting court materials, and attending court proceedings.

Our practice handles both family law and civil litigation matters. While previous civil litigation experience is not required, we are looking for someone who is open to expanding their practice and assisting with civil litigation files as needed.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work independently while benefiting from a flexible and collaborative practice environment. We are open to discussing different compensation arrangements, including hourly compensation or a fee-splitting structure, depending on experience and the nature of the working relationship.

Duties

- Advise and represent clients in family law matters, including divorce, parenting time, decision-making responsibility, child support, spousal support, and property division.
- Prepare and review legal documents, including applications, answers, motions, affidavits, case conference briefs, settlement agreements, and other court materials.
- Conduct legal research using CanLII and other legal resources to remain informed of relevant legislation, case law, and procedural developments.
- Negotiate settlements with opposing counsel and work toward practical resolutions that protect clients' interests.
- Represent clients at case conferences, motions,

settlement conferences, and other court proceedings.
- Manage assigned client files independently, maintain accurate records, monitor deadlines, and ensure compliance with court rules and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and other professionals.
- Assist with civil litigation matters, including drafting pleadings, conducting legal research, preparing motions, and attending court proceedings where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with the firm's principal lawyer on ongoing matters when required.

Qualifications and Experience

- 1–3 years of experience practising family law in Ontario.
- Must be licensed to practise law in Ontario and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Must maintain appropriate LAWPRO skilled liability insurance coverage.
- Strong understanding of Ontario family law legislation, the Family Law Rules, and applicable court procedures.
- Experience drafting pleadings, affidavits, conference briefs, and other litigation materials.
- Experience appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice and/or Superior Court of Justice is preferred.
- Civil litigation experience is not required; however, candidates must be willing to learn and practise in this area as part of their role.
- Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage files independently, meet deadlines, and communicate professionally with clients.

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Compensation and Working Arrangement

SCPC LAW offers a flexible working arrangement suited to a lawyer seeking part-time hours while maintaining an active legal practice.

- Hourly compensation starting at $100.00 per hour, depending on experience and responsibilities.
- Fee-splitting arrangements are also an option, with terms to be negotiated between the lawyer and SCPC LAW.
- Expected Billable workload of approximately 15–20 hours per week.
- Flexible scheduling and the ability to work remotely for portions of the week.
- Opportunities to manage files independently and gain additional courtroom experience.
- Exposure to both family law and civil litigation matters.
- Opportunity for increased hours and responsibilities as the practice develops.

Benefits

- Flexible schedule
- Hybrid work arrangement
- Work-from-home opportunities
