About the Role

Clutch is hiring its first Director of Health, Safety & Environment to build and lead a best-in-class HSE function for a high-growth, multi-site production and logistics business. You will own the enterprise HSE mandate: setting the strategy, building the team and systems, shaping the culture, and protecting every worker across our national footprint.

Reporting to the Head of People Operations, you will be the senior HSE authority for the business and a trusted advisor to the executive team. You will lead the implementation of a Safety Management System, build and lead an HSE team as Clutch’s footprint grows,

and translate audit findings into sustainable programs. You will create a safety culture where workers feel heard, hazards get reported, and leaders take action. Operational leaders own safe execution. You will set standards, provide oversight and hold leaders accountable, with clear authority to stop unsafe work.

What You’ll Do

Strategy, Governance & Compliance

- Set the national HSE strategy and secure the executive sponsorship and investment to deliver it.
- Own the Safety Management System and Health & Safety Policy, with a clear path to certification, including the national governance cadence and the annual internal audit program.
- Own the regulatory register across all operating provinces (Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Alberta) and federal requirements including WHMIS and TDG.
- Own environmental management programs: hazardous waste, used oil, chemicals, batteries, spill prevention and response, and applicable permits.
- Serve as the senior point of contact for regulators, inspectors and auditors.

Logistics & Field Operations Safety

- Own HSE for yard traffic, vehicle movements, trailer loading and fueling, including TDG compliance.
- Partner with People Operations and Logistics on driver and fleet safety.

- Keep pedestrians and vehicles apart with enforced traffic management plans and safe-work standards for loading and moving vehicles.

Risk, Hazard & Incident Management

- Roll out the RACE hazard process at every site and own the enterprise HSE risk register.
- Build a worker-led hazard reporting system that closes the loop, and run the contractor and visitor safety program.
- Lead root-cause investigations of serious incidents and track every corrective action to verified closure.
- Manage WSIB/WCB claims, return-to-work and modified duty to bring down costs and experience ratings.

Training, Culture & Worker Engagement

- Build the national HSE training matrix, a New Worker Safety Orientation and a Safety Leadership program.
- Back every site’s JHSC, give workers a real voice, and coach leaders to be visible on safety.

Performance & Team Leadership

- Build, lead and develop the HSE team, defining the organization structure, hiring HSE managers, advisors, and site-level specialists as the business scales.
- Be an awesome cross-functional collaborator working alongside multiple leaders to ensure HSE is embedded within every facet of our operations.
- Set clear goals and performance expectations for the HSE team, and coach them to become robust partners to site leaders.
- Build strong collaborative relationships with external partners, consultants, auditors, and certification bodies.

What You’ll Need

- 7+ years of progressive HSE experience, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role (Senior Manager, Director or equivalent) with national or multi-site accountability.
- Proven experience building and leading an HSE team, including managers or leaders who report to you.
