About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Color Match Technician to join our industrial finishing team in Mississauga. In this role, you will be responsible for formulating, adjusting, testing, and approving custom thermoset powder coatings to meet exact customer specifications and architectural/industrial standards (AAMA, Qualicoat, RAL, Pantone).
You will work closely with production, quality assurance, and customer service teams in a contemporary, climate-controlled laboratory and sample-spray booth environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Color Formulation & Matching: Formulate and adjust thermoset powder coating chemistries (polyesters, epoxies, hybrids, and urethanes) to achieve precise visual and instrumental color matches against physical panels, liquid standards, or digital targets.
- Spectrophotometry & Quality Control: Operate benchtop and portable spectrophotometers (e.g., X-Rite, Datacolor) to measure $L^*a^*b^*$, $Delta E$, gloss levels (60°ree; / 20°ree; / 85°ree;), and metamerism indices under standard illuminants (D65, A, CWF).
- Sample Preparation & Application: Prepare metal substrates (aluminum, CRS, galvanized steel), pre-treat surfaces, apply trial powder coatings using manual electrostatic spray guns (Corona / Tribo), and manage cure schedules using laboratory convection ovens.
- Physical & Mechanical Testing: Conduct physical film performance testing according to ASTM standards, including film thickness (DFT via magnetic/eddy-current gauges), cross-hatch adhesion (ASTM D3359), impact resistance (ASTM D2794), conical mandrel flexibility, and pencil hardness.
- Production Scale-Up: Translate lab-scale formulations into batch tickets for plant blending, extrusion, and milling; troubleshoot off-shade or off-spec production batches and calculate tint-up additions.
- Documentation & Records: Maintain a library of customer masters, formulation databases, retained panels, Certificate of Analysis (CoA) records, and batch retains.
- Lab Safety & Housekeeping: Adhere to Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) guidelines, maintain WHMIS records, handle raw pigments and additives safely, and keep application equipment clean.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: Minimum 2–4 years of hands-on experience in color matching and quality testing within powder coating manufacturing, industrial custom coating, or paint/inks manufacturing.
- Visual Acuity: Must pass the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test (or equivalent standard color vision assessment) with superior color discrimination capability.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of powder coating chemistry (resin types, crosslinkers, pigment loading, matting agents, metallic flakes) and cure kinetics.
- Equipment Proficiency: Proven experience operating spectrophotometers, color formulation software, gloss meters,
and manual electrostatic spray equipment.
- Education: Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Chemical Technology, Materials Science, Industrial Finishing, or equivalent practical trade experience.
- Soft Skills: High attention to detail, strong analytical problem-solving skills, and ability to meet fast-paced customer turnaround deadlines.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Combination of laboratory bench work, spray-booth application, and production-floor troubleshooting.
- PPE required: Air-purifying respirators, eye protection, safety footwear, and lab coats.
- Ability to lift up to 22 kg (50 lbs) occasionally (powder boxes, raw materials).
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly wage with regular review.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance plan.
- Group RRSP matching program.
- Annual safety footwear and prescription safety glasses allowance.
- Paid vacation, personal days, and statutory holidays.

Company Description
Color Powder Coating was established with the purpose of marketing and distributing high quality powder coatings, imported from Europe, on Canadian and US markets. Due to the flexibility of the aforementioned markets, as well as the intense competition that is present there, it was soon evident that the company would face an uncertain future if it only distributed powder coatings. Therefore, based on all market trends, we have adopted a decision to establish our own production of powder coatings in Canada.
