Full Time Dessert Baker – Join the Family at Decadent Brulee
At Decadent Brulee, we don’t just bake—we help our neighbors celebrate. We are a small, "Ma and Pa" dessert shop through and through. We value pride of work over high-speed chaos, and we treat our long-standing customers like old friends.
We love what we do, but let’s be entirely honest upfront: professional baking is a lot less glamorous than Instagram makes it look. It is physical, repetitive, hard work. We are looking for someone who wants to learn the actual reality of running a busy neighborhood staple, quirks and all.
Location & Commuting Reality
We are proudly located in the heart of downtown. While being downtown brings an incredible energy and amazing neighborhood regulars, it also means parking and transportation can be a real challenge. Free parking is non-existent down here, so this position is best suited for someone who plans to use public transit or already has a seamless strategy for downtown commuting.
The Schedule & Our Annual Winter Hibernation
This is a permanent, full-time position, but our yearly calendar has a unique rhythm that you need to know upfront:
- The Baker's Dream Hours: Unlike many commercial bakeries, we do not work brutal 4:00 AM graveyard shifts. We keep standard morning-to-midday hours, meaning you get to keep a normal life outside of work.
- The Christmas Sprint: From late November through December 24th, it is an absolute, chaotic whirlwind. We work hard, stand for long hours, and push through massive holiday rushes together.
- The Winter Break (Unpaid / EI Eligible): Because we run so hard in December, we completely close the shop right after Christmas and for most of January. This is a planned, unpaid winter break. We issue a Record of Employment (ROE) so you can apply for seasonal Employment Insurance (EI)
benefits (Service Canada calculates your eligibility using your total hours worked across all employers over the past 52 weeks), giving you a guaranteed month to rest and recharge your batteries.
- The Late-Winter Ramp Up: When we reopen in late January/February, the city goes into a quiet winter lull. The workload drops significantly, and things are much slower as we steady our pace and build back up for spring.
The Real Deal (What You’ll Actually Be Doing)
- The Weekly Routine: Outside of the holiday rush, you will be baking the same core menu of cookies, tarts, and cakes week after week. If you get bored scooping the 500th identical cookie or prepping the same base recipes every Tuesday, this isn't the spot for you. Consistency is our superpower.
- The Finishing Touch: Using a steady hand and a sharp eye to decorate desserts so they look perfect in our display case.
- Kitchen Grunt Work: Dishes, sweeping, deep cleaning, and organizing. We all scrub floors here; there are no rockstars who are "too good" to wash a bowl.
- Serving the Neighborhood: We are a small crew, so you will occasionally step out front to help a regular customer, pack boxes perfectly, and answer questions with a friendly attitude.
Why You’ll Love It Here
- Willing to Train: You don’t need an expensive culinary degree. If you have a passion for sweets, a steady hand, and a massive work ethic, we will gladly teach you our recipes and decorating techniques. (Prior commercial kitchen experience is a huge bonus, though!)
- Guaranteed Extended Downtime:
No fighting for holiday time off or working through New Year's exhaustion. Our January closure is built right into your yearly schedule.
- Real Community: You aren't just an anonymous staff member in the back. You will get to know the regulars who have kept our lights on for years.
Who You Are
- Mentally & Physically Resilient: You don’t shy away from repetitive tasks or heavy holiday workloads, and you adapt well to the changing pace of the seasons (from 100mph in December to a slow-burn in February).
- Detail-Oriented: You genuinely care if the frosting or alignment is off and want to fix it before a customer sees it.
- Reliable & Grounded: You show up on time, ready to work, bringing kind and stable energy into a tight kitchen space.
- Community Minded: You enjoy the close-knit feel of a local shop and treat people with respect.
Interested?
We’d love to hear from you. Whether you’ve been in commercial kitchens for years or you’re a dedicated home baker looking to step into the industry with your eyes wide open, send over your resume and a quick note about why you think you'd be a great fit for our kitchen.
