The Opportunity
Our client is an established boutique bookkeeping and accounting firm with a dedicated team and a focused group of long-standing clients. The team takes the time to understand each client, answer their questions and provide support they can genuinely rely on.
They are looking for a Senior Bookkeeper to join their close-knit bookkeeping and payroll team. The Senior Bookkeeper will support reliable, timely bookkeeping services for a portfolio of clients. The role combines hands-on bookkeeping with client communication, month-end and year-end work, and practical feedback that supports the quality and improvement of client files.
You’ll work with guidance from the Director and tenured team members as you get to know the clients and processes.
What You’ll Do
Bookkeeping and reporting
- Manage client files and help ensure work is accurate and completed on time.
- Investigate bookkeeping discrepancies and unusual transactions, follow up for missing information, resolve routine issues, and bring complex matters to the Director with relevant details and recommended next steps.
- Complete and review full-cycle bookkeeping, including transaction coding, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, general ledger entries, and financial reporting.
- Enter client budgets and prepare budget-to-actual reports.
- Prepare year-end books and supporting schedules for tax accountants.
- Process, review, and reconcile payroll, including timecards, T4s, ROEs, benefits administration, and government remittances.
- Prepare GST and other government filings, including WCB.
- Communicate with government agencies such as CRA, Service Canada, and WCB on clients’ behalf.
Client service
- Be a responsive point of contact for clients’ bookkeeping questions and requests.
- Meet with clients to review their financial reports, explain results and bookkeeping matters in clear, practical terms, and answer their questions.
- Coordinate client review meetings and follow up on documents and action items.
- Build positive working relationships with clients by phone, email, video, and in person.
- Make occasional client visits, pick up paperwork, and make bank deposits as needed.
Teamwork and workflow
- Coordinate deadlines, handoffs,
and follow-up items with the Director and team.
- Review bookkeeping work and provide clear, practical feedback that helps improve client files and supports consistent practices.
- Share observations and feedback with the Director to support team development and performance discussions.
- Co-own the development of Financial Cents with the team member leading the organization-wide update, including workflows, templates, documentation, testing, and team adoption.
- Identify process improvements and share recommendations with the team.
- Support the effective use of bookkeeping systems, including QuickBooks Online and related software.
Work Alongside the Team
- Provide practical accounting support, guidance and feedback to the bookkeeping team.
- Help ensure client work is accurate, complete and delivered on time.
- Work with the Director and team to strengthen client procedures, workflows and close checklists.
- Step into bookkeeping, reconciliations or project work when additional support is needed or when working directly in the books is the best way to resolve an issue.
You’ll Be a Great Fit If You…
- Can understand the story behind a set of financial statements and explain it in plain language.
- Enjoy working with clients and helping them understand their numbers.
- Take ownership, stay organized and follow things through.
- Naturally investigate when something does not reconcile or look right.
- Enjoy collaborating, sharing knowledge and working directly in the books when needed.
What You Bring
- Diploma or certificate in Accounting, Bookkeeping, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive full-cycle bookkeeping and accounting experience, preferably in a public practice, outsourced accounting, or multi-client environment.
- Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting,
including reconciliations, adjusting entries, month-end and year-end processes, financial statement preparation, payroll, remittances, and government filings.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online and strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience preparing and reviewing working papers, financial reports, and accounting records with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Experience reviewing the work of others, providing guidance, mentoring, or supporting the development of team members.
- Strong client service, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience with document management, workflow, and accounting technology platforms such as SharePoint, Dropbox, Financial Cents, Dext, and Plooto, or the ability to quickly learn new systems.
- Non-profit accounting, funder reporting experience, and a CPA designation (or progress toward obtaining one) are considered assets.
- Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation to attend occasional client meetings, pickups, deposits, or other business-related travel as required.
How You’ll Be Supported and What Success Looks Like
You will work closely with the Director and tenured Bookkeepers as you learn the clients, systems and processes. The bookkeeping team already understands the day-to-day work, so you will have people to collaborate with and opportunities to talk through more complex matters.
Success means understanding what is happening across client files, keeping the work moving and catching issues before reports are sent. As your knowledge grows, you will confidently lead routine financial review meetings, provide clients with transparent answers and become a trusted resource for the team.
