Intermediate Residential Designer – Production Housing

Ian Robertson Design is looking for a creative and experienced Intermediate Residential Designer to join our growing team.

We are looking for someone with a minimum of 5 years of experience in low-rise residential design, with a strong background in production housing. The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of residential design principles, zoning requirements, and the ability to independently develop floor plans and elevations from initial concept through to final design.

This position is suited to someone who is creative, detail-oriented, and takes initiative, while enjoying working collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develop creative and functional floor plans for low-rise residential projects, including detached homes, semi-detached homes, and townhouses
- Create, modify, and coordinate architectural designs using AutoCAD
- Develop and coordinate exterior elevations that complement the architectural design and meet project requirements
- Review and interpret zoning by-laws and municipal design guidelines
- Develop residential product typologies based on lot configurations, zoning requirements, and builder specifications
- Collaborate with other Designers and Project Managers throughout the design process
- Review and incorporate client feedback and design revisions
- Independently manage design assignments and meet project deadlines

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

- Diploma in Architectural Technician (2-year program) or Architectural Technology (3-year program) from a recognized college, or equivalent education
- Minimum 5 years of experience in low-rise residential architectural design
- Experience designing production housing for residential builders




- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD
- Strong understanding of residential design principles, construction methods, and building materials
- Experience reviewing and interpreting zoning by-laws and municipal design requirements
- Ability to independently develop residential floor plans and elevations from concept through to final design
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Creative problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with clients and team members

Assets (Not Required):

- Experience designing stacked townhouses or other higher-density residential housing
- Experience with commercial design
- Previous project management experience
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and Bluebeam
