WOODLANDS CAREER PROSPECT DECK HAND – TUG BOAT SEASONAL Competition No. 26-21 As part of Kruger Publication Papers division, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited is a quality leader in the manufacturing of newsprint, and holds the Sustainable Forest Initiative Certification as well as being self-sufficient on energy between Deer Lake Power Generation, Steam Power and Steam Recovery. We aim to be fully reliant on clean energy. OVERVIEW Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is currently looking for a Deck Hand to join the seasonal operation to work on the Tug Boat. This work will run roughly January to April of each year but may be required for short durations outside of this timeframe. RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
· Assist in routine maintenance
· Tie-up and docking of the tug
· Other duties as assigned by the captain and/or supervisor
· Examples of some duties noted below: 1) Prepare tug for winter operations, launch from dry dock, and attach ice plow – The tug’s engine antifreeze compartment, which also serves as part of the boat’s ballast system, has to be refilled after being drained in the spring. The engine and all operating components are also checked and readied for operation. Once launched, the ice plow is attached to the hull of the tug. Refer to launch/dry dock procedure 2) Ice control through the Bay of Islands channel and around wharf for paper boats – The main purpose for tug operations is ice control. While ice breakers periodically open up an ice channel into the port of Corner Brook, the tug keeps this channel sufficiently open throughout the winter to allow the paper boats to navigate through to the company’s wharf. The tug also has to keep the pack ice away from the wharf to allow the paper boats to get in close to dock. 3) Bring harbour pilot out to incoming paper boats, in addition to oil tankers coming into Imperial & Ultramar – When boats get into the inner Bay of Islands,
the Harbour Pilot has to board the boat to provide navigational guidance. The tug has to bring the pilot out to the boat, and with both boats still moving forward, has to get the tug close enough for the pilot to grab the ladder hanging off the boat and board. 4) Assist paper boats in maneuvering to wharf for docking, and back out to the open channel when loaded. – The tug is also used to help the paper boat maneuver into the dock for loading and then away from the dock again, and back out through the channel again when loaded. 5) Fueling the tug – The tug is fueled as needed from the company wharf by local fuel delivery trucks. 6) Performing routine daily maintenance – Even though an engineer is not required for the Indian Lake due to her size (61 tons), the company still has an engineer as part of the crew of three people. Most of the routine maintenance required while operating the tug is related to the diesel engines. Assist engineer with maintenance/repairs as required. 7) Preparing Tug for the season – At the beginning of season ice plow has to be attached and then later removed in the spring. 8) Summer refit and maintenance – Summer maintenance includes considerable scraping and painting as well as replacing the anodes on the hull. An electrolysis process is used to detect pitting and measure steel thickness on the hull. Steel plating is put in place as required. Engine work as well as other repairs and maintenance is also done as required QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate must have:
