Under supervision incumbents of this class provide immediate, secure supervision, care, and behavior management for youth in custody, often acting as frontline staff during crisis situations at Woodfield Cottage Secure Detention Facility in accordance with rules and regulations as established by the Department of Probation, the Recent York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), and the State Commission of Corrections (SCOC). The incumbent responds to emergencies involving youth behavior, utilizing de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques. This includes addressing suicide threats, mental health crises, self-harm and other urgent situations that may require OCFS approved physical restraint techniques.

Duties also involve providing support and additional supervision to youth in custody throughout the housing units,



as well as providing security. This position differs from Youth Detention Specialist by virtue of its higher level of responsibility regarding the immediate response to crisis situations at the detention facility. An Incumbent in this title works a variety of shifts and schedules including nights, weekends and holidays.

Direct supervision is received from the Supervising Youth Detention Specialist. Duties require proficiency in both Spanish and English, providing interpretative and information services. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class.
