3rd & 4th Year Electrical Apprentice —Industrial Construction (Chilliwack BC)
Vanguard Power Ltd. | Chilliwack, BC
You are a year or two from your Red Seal, and the next twelve months decide what kind of Journeyperson you become. Spend them on industrial work — three-phase distribution, motor control, instrumentation and controls on water treatment plants, pump stations and fueling facilities — working from full drawing sets with reduced supervision, drafting your own material take-offs for review, and mentoring juniors with a Journeyperson watching. We will hold you to near-Journeyperson standards on code, quality and judgment, and we will say so in writing on day one. If you want a fourth year that prepares you for the exam and for the trade, and you are willing to travel and live in camp when the project is out of town, this is the posting.
About Vanguard Power Ltd.
Vanguard Power Ltd. is a British Columbia-based industrial electrical contractor. Our work includes water and wastewater treatment plants, pump and lift stations, traffic infrastructure, CNG, LNG, hydrogen and petroleum fueling stations, water parks and recreational facilities, and industrial power distribution, instrumentation, and controls projects across BC and Alberta. Our field teams work on live operating facilities, shutdowns, and technically demanding installations that require people who think critically, plan ahead, and take ownership of their work — without needing to be told what to do next.
The Role
You perform near-Journeyperson-level installation, testing and troubleshooting work with reduced direct supervision, read and work from full drawing sets and specifications with minimal clarification, and prepare to sit the Red Seal exam. This is the final and most independent year of the apprenticeship: you begin taking on basic planning and material take-off for your own task, submitted for review, and you mentor 1st- to 3rd-year apprentices on technique and safe practice, always under a Journeyperson's or Foreman's oversight. You verify your own work before calling it complete, contribute redlines for work under your own hand, and flag material shortages, access issues and drawing conflicts as soon as you see them. The role carries no independent supervisory, purchasing or sign-off authority at any point — every output is delivered inside the crew's supervision structure, with the Journeyperson or Foreman holding final accountability — and you hold the same unconditional stop-work authority as everyone else in the company.
What You'll Do
● Complete assigned installation, testing and troubleshooting tasks — feeders, motor control, three-phase distribution, grounding and bonding, instrumentation and controls support — with reduced direct supervision on familiar, trained task types
● Read and work from the full drawing set and specifications for your assigned task, confirming scope, drawings and special code requirements with the Journeyperson or Foreman before starting
● Verify your own work quality against code and standard before calling a task complete, and flag anything uncertain rather than guessing
● Draft basic planning and material take-off inputs for your own task and submit them for the Journeyperson's or Foreman's review
● Mentor and demonstrate technique and safe practice to 1st- to 3rd-year apprentices under a Journeyperson's or Foreman's direct oversight, and take part in crew skills-development activities
● Flag material shortages, access issues and drawing conflicts as soon as identified,
and check in weekly on progress, material needs and upcoming access constraints
● Contribute redline notes for work performed under your own hand and hand them off for the Journeyperson's or Foreman's sign-off
● Record accurate time entries against the correct task or cost code, review Level 4 training and hours with the Foreman monthly, and sit or prepare to sit the Red Seal exam
Travel
This is a field role. Full willingness and ability to travel and work out of town — including remote, camp-based assignments across BC (including the interior) and Alberta, with occasional projects in other provinces — is a condition of employment.
What You Bring — Must Have
● Registered with SkilledTradesBC as a Construction Electrician apprentice at Level 3 or Level 4 in good standing
● Successful completion of Level 1 through Level 2 or 3 technical training and the required work-based hours; substantially through the apprenticeship or preparing for the Red Seal exam
● Legally entitled to work in Canada
● Willingness and ability to travel and work out of town, including camp-based assignments, matching crew and project assignment
● Willingness to work in the physical conditions of industrial electrical fieldwork: lifting, climbing, working at heights and in confined spaces, extended standing, and outdoor and seasonal site conditions
● Demonstrated ability to work from full drawing sets with minimal clarification and to carry trained task types with reduced supervision, and the judgment to escalate any code question, drawing conflict or untrained method rather than resolve it alone
Nice to Have
● Hours on industrial or process sites — plants, pump stations, fueling, utilities — including feeders, motor control centres, VFDs, grounding systems and three-phase distribution
● Exposure to instrumentation, PLC or control panels, or an interest in controls work;
● Level 4 technical training completed and a Red Seal exam date booked or written
● Material take-offs or short-interval planning already drafted for review
● Mentoring or demonstrating to junior apprentices already done under a Journeyperson's oversight
● Current OFA Level 1 or equivalent first aid, site safety tickets (CSTS, fall protection, confined space, WHMIS, lockout), and prior out-of-town or camp work
Who Succeeds in This Role
The person who does well in this role works from the full set like a Journeyperson and asks like an apprentice: they build what the drawings and the Code require, and the moment a rule is uncertain or a detail conflicts they stop and bring it to the Journeyperson with the section and the drawing reference in hand. They verify their own work before anyone else does and tell the Journeyperson the same day about the one termination they are not sure of. They draft the take-off before they are asked, submit it for review rather than ordering from it, and never buy, commit or sign anything on Vanguard's behalf. The juniors copy them, and what they copy is gear on, locks on, method taught not shortcut, and the question asked out loud. They are studying for the Red Seal on the rotation, not after it.
What We Offer
● Compensation:
to be confirmed based on apprenticeship level and experience.
● A written role package on day one that tells you what you may do with reduced supervision, what you may draft for review, what you must escalate, and what is never yours to decide at this level
● Industrial scope that prepares you for the exam and the trade — three-phase distribution, motor control, grounding and bonding, instrumentation and controls support — on live facilities across BC and Alberta
● Monthly tracking of your Level 4 hours and technical training with your Foreman and a documented readiness review ahead of Journeyperson certification
● A defined scorecard — independence and reliability on assigned tasks, quality of work, skill progression to Level 3/4 on the competency ladder, mentorship of juniors, safety, attendance, timekeeping — reviewed against records
● A path: Red Seal, then Journeyperson at a contractor that has written down what a Journeyperson decides without calling the PM, and what a Lead Hand designation adds
Work Environment and Schedule
Active industrial construction sites, including live operating facilities, water and wastewater plants and fueling stations, in outdoor and wide-ranging indoor conditions with all standard PPE required. Physically demanding: standing, kneeling, climbing, lifting materials and tools, working at heights and in confined spaces as the task requires. Variable schedules including shift work, overtime and multi-week out-of-town assignments when the project requires it.
How We Hire
Indeed screeners first, then a resume filter against this role's must-sees. Shortlisted candidates answer a short set of role-specific skills questions with a defined pass mark, then two interviews: a fit and culture conversation, and a technical interview with the Director of Field Operations and the hiring Foreman built around this role's decision authority and scorecard.
