About UAS Inc.

Unmanned Aerial Services Inc. (UAS) has been putting drones, LiDAR and ground robots to work in underground hard rock mines since 2014, and has operated in active production mines since 2017. We're headquartered in Lively, Ontario, and work across Canada and the U.S. for clients including Vale, Glencore, Barrick, Newmont, Agnico Eagle and Alamos Gold.

We capture accurate digital twins and perform visual inspections in places people can't or shouldn't go: ore passes, raises, stopes, shafts and bins. We fly the Flyability Elios 3, run Emesent Hovermap LiDAR, and do wireline camera shaft inspections, 360° raise video drops and UT inspections of bin liners. We're also a 24/7 emergency service provider for the mining industry.

The Role

We're hiring a Lead Data Processing Technician to run our data processing team and own the quality of everything we deliver. You'll turn raw LiDAR, imagery and video captured underground into digital twins and inspection reports for mine operations, engineering, geotech and mine survey departments.

This role is about judging and controlling data quality. Underground, almost everything we capture is SLAM LiDAR, so you need to really understand how SLAM works and where it breaks down: long featureless drifts and raises, poor loop closure, dust and water, and drift that builds up over long runs. You'll decide whether a dataset is good enough to deliver, and be able to show the client how accurate it is.

You'll set processing standards, sign off on QA/QC, mentor junior technicians and be the go-to person for clients' technical questions. You'll stay hands-on with the hardest datasets, including emergency turnarounds. Our reports describe what was seen; they don't interpret the data for the client.

We give real weight to a GIS or surveying/geomatics background, and to anyone with deep experience working with 3D data. Mining experience is a bonus, not a requirement.

Responsibilities – Leadership and quality

- Lead,

schedule and mentor the data processing team
- Own QA/QC sign-off on all datasets and reports before they go to clients
- Set processing standards, accuracy thresholds, report templates and workflow documentation under our ISO 9001 quality system
- Act as technical point of contact for clients on formats, accuracy, coordinate systems and deliverable specs
- Plan deliverables with project managers before jobs go to the field, and give crews feedback on capture quality
- Recommend processing software, hardware and workflow improvements
- Lead emergency data turnarounds

Responsibilities – Data processing and deliverables

- Process SLAM LiDAR from Emesent Hovermap, Flyability Elios 3 and other platforms
- Build 3D digital twins and meshes of ore passes, raises, stopes, shafts, drifts and bins
- Compare repeat scans to show changes in shape, wear and buildup over time
- Extract sections, profiles, volumes and measurements
- Process imagery, 360° video and wireline camera footage
- Package data for mine software (Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine, AutoCAD, GIS) in formats like LAS/LAZ, E57, DXF/DWG and OBJ
- Occasional travel to client mine sites, including underground

What we weigh most

- A background in GIS, surveying, geomatics or remote sensing, through work, school or both
- Hands-on experience with 3D data in any industry: point clouds, meshes, CAD/BIM, reality capture or photogrammetry
- Strong understanding of coordinate systems, local/mine grids, transformations and control

Required

- 5+ years working with LiDAR, point cloud or other 3D data, with 2+ years leading work, projects or people

- A deep understanding of SLAM LiDAR and its limitations, and the judgement to decide when data is good enough to deliver
- Registration and accuracy: spotting drift and loop-closure problems, tying multiple scans to survey control, verifying against independent checkpoints, and reporting error to clients against defined thresholds
- Strong proficiency with tools such as CloudCompare, Emesent Aura, FARO Connect/GeoSLAM, Leica Cyclone, Global Mapper, TerraScan or RealityCapture
- Proven experience building QA/QC processes for 3D or geospatial deliverables
- Ability to read engineering drawings and mine plans
- Ability to manage several jobs and tight deadlines at once
- Clear communication and comfort dealing directly with clients

Assets

- Diploma or degree in Geomatics, Surveying, GIS, Remote Sensing or Mining Technology
- Scripting and automation experience with Python, PDAL, laspy or similar tools
- Experience with Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine, Leapfrog or Maptek PointStudio
- Change detection and volume calculation experience
- Common Core or other underground mining experience
- Valid driver's licence; able to meet mine site medical and safety requirements

Why Join Us

- Work with data from places almost nobody gets to see
- Your work helps keep underground workers secure and helps mines respond to emergencies
- Lead and shape a growing data team
- Work on leading platforms including Flyability Elios 3 and Emesent Hovermap
- Join a growing Northern Ontario company, with expansion into South America underway
