Diverse Learners Tutoring | Vancouver, BC
Position: Part-Time Independent ContractorLocation: Vancouver, BC – In-Home TutoringCompensation: 55-75 hour, depending on qualifications and experience
About Diverse Learners Tutoring
Diverse Learners Tutoring provides individualized academic support for students with learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and challenges with written expression and executive functioning.
Many of our secondary students have transitioned from specialized schools for students with dyslexia, such as Fraser Academy, into mainstream high schools. While they may have developed strong foundational reading skills, they often continue to need explicit instruction in written expression, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and managing academic expectations.
We are looking for an experienced High School English & Learning Support Tutor who understands remedial instruction and can help students develop the skills needed to become more confident, independent learners.
About the Role
This position is primarily focused on English Language Arts for students in Grades 8–12, with some support across other academic subjects.
We are looking for someone who can identify gaps in students' skills and provide structured, explicit instruction rather than simply helping them complete homework.
For example, a student may understand a novel and be able to discuss it verbally but struggle to write an analytical paragraph independently. Another student may recognize literary devices but have difficulty explaining their significance or selecting appropriate textual evidence.
The ideal tutor knows how to break these skills into manageable steps, provide appropriate scaffolding, and gradually build independence.
Responsibilities
Remedial English & Written Expression
- Provide individualized English instruction for students in Grades 8–12, particularly those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other learning differences.
- Explicitly teach sentence construction, sentence expansion, grammar, and paragraph development.
- Teach students how to use sentence starters, sentence frames, graphic organizers, and structured writing strategies to generate and organize ideas.
- Support students with analytical paragraphs, persuasive writing, literary responses, essays, and other high school writing assignments.
- Teach students how to develop a clear argument, select relevant textual evidence, and explain how that evidence supports their ideas.
- Use modelling, guided practice, and gradual release of responsibility to help students become more independent writers.
Reading Comprehension & Literary Analysis
- Teach literary devices such as symbolism, imagery, irony, foreshadowing, metaphor, simile, and personification.
- Help students move beyond identifying literary devices to explaining their purpose and effect on a text.
- Explicitly teach inferencing, identifying themes, analyzing characters, comparing perspectives, and drawing conclusions.
- Develop students' critical thinking skills by teaching them to justify interpretations and support their responses with evidence.
- Support comprehension of increasingly complex novels, short stories, nonfiction articles, and academic texts.
Academic & Executive Functioning Support
- Assist students with assignments across other high school subjects, particularly Social Studies, Science, and Humanities.
- Help students interpret assignment instructions, identify expectations, and break down larger projects into manageable steps.
- Teach planning, organization, time management, and study strategies.
- Support students in developing independence rather than becoming reliant on tutoring for homework completion.
Individualized Instruction & Learning Differences
- Adapt instruction for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other learning differences.
- Understand how dysgraphia can affect sentence generation, spelling, handwriting, and written output.
- Incorporate assistive technology such as speech-to-text, text-to-speech, word prediction, and digital graphic organizers when appropriate.
- Collaborate with the owner on individualized programming, instructional goals, and student progress.
