Do you enjoy working with numbers, identifying financial trends, and turning complex information into practical insight? Here’s your opportunity to play a key role in supporting the financial health of an organization dedicated to improving workplace safety across Nova Scotia’s construction industry.
Construction Safety Nova Scotia (CSNS) is seeking a Financial Controller to support its financial operations and long-term planning. Reporting to the Director, Finance and IT, you’ll lead day-to-day accounting activities including accounts payable, payroll and benefits administration, month-end close, and financial reporting. You’ll also support budgeting, forecasting, and audit coordination while helping improve financial systems and internal controls.
Are you ready to:
- Coordinate day-to-day finance activities across accounts payable, payroll and benefits, expense management, and month-end close to ensure work is accurate and completed on time?
- Prepare financial statements and variance analyses that help leadership understand financial performance and make informed decisions?
- Support budgeting and forecasting by working with the Director, Finance and IT and budget owners to monitor results and identify opportunities for improvement?
- Maintain strong internal controls and coordinate external audits by preparing supporting documentation and following up on audit findings?
- Administer financial systems such as Acumatica by managing user access and workflows while developing reports and supporting staff?
- Contribute to strategic initiatives including an HRIS implementation with integrated payroll and benefits, accounting system enhancements, and reviews of audit services and banking arrangements?
What success looks like:
- Financial operations are accurate and completed on time. Reliable processes support payroll, payments, and month-end close.
- Leadership receives timely financial reports and clear analysis to support budgeting and strategic decisions.
- Internal controls are applied consistently. Financial risks are identified early and audit requirements are met with complete documentation.
- Staff have the guidance they need to follow finance procedures and use financial systems effectively.
- Financial processes and systems continue to improve, supporting efficiency and reliable reporting.
Do you have what it takes to support CSNS finances?
You’re an analytical and dependable professional who takes pride in accuracy and sound judgment. You’re comfortable working independently and supporting others while meeting firm deadlines. You can also explain financial information in plain language and help others understand what the numbers mean.
What you bring:
Education & Experience: A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, commerce, or a related discipline, along with 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. This includes full-cycle accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A CPA designation is strongly preferred. Candidates enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program will also be considered.
Payroll & Financial Operations: Experience processing payroll and administering group benefits is required. This includes statutory remittances and year-end reporting. You also have experience overseeing finance processes and reviewing the work of others. Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification is an asset.
Financial Analysis & Reporting: Experience supporting budget development, forecasting, variance analysis, and external audits. You can interpret financial results and explain trends in a way that supports sound decision-making.
Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365. Experience with a cloud-based accounting or ERP system is required, including system administration and report writing. Experience with Acumatica or expense management platforms is an asset. Experience supporting finance or HRIS system implementations is also an asset.
Organization & Accountability: Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities while meeting fixed deadlines. You take ownership of your work and maintain accurate records.
Communication & Collaboration: Clear and qualified communication skills.
You can build positive working relationships with staff and leadership as well as external auditors and vendors.
Judgment & Functional Leadership: The ability to exercise sound judgment and identify financial risks. You know when to resolve issues independently and when to escalate them. You can also set priorities and review work to support consistent finance practices without relying on formal reporting relationships.
Experience in a not-for-profit, member-based, or association environment is an asset. Experience in the construction, safety, training, or occupational health and safety sector is also an asset.
