About Materia Bioworks

Materia Bioworks is a software business that helps suppliers, manufacturers and brands develop and launch products made from bio-based and sustainable materials, faster and with less waste. Our platform guides users from polymer and composite formulation through prototyping and scale-up to market-ready products.

You'll join a cross functional team of software engineers and materials scientists to deliver on those goals.

The role

You will take a leading role in the development and refinement of data driven systems that empower researchers and engineers to efficiently develop and scale custom material formulations. This includes regression and classification systems, optimization methods, recommenders, and developing proprietary algorithms to support a variety of use cases across the R&D; journey.

You'll partner with our software engineers, who own production infrastructure, so you can focus on the science of the models while still writing clean, reviewable Python that ships. Remote across Canada, with core hours aligned to Eastern Time and occasional in-person events in Toronto.

What you bring

- 5+ years applying statistical modeling or machine learning to experimental data in chemistry, materials, pharma, chemical engineering or a related physical science.
- Hands-on experience with Bayesian optimization, Gaussian processes, design of experiments or active learning applied to real experimental campaigns.
- Rigour in validation and uncertainty quantification, including leakage-safe cross-validation, grouped splits and calibrated uncertainty.

- Fluency in scientific Python (NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, plus a probabilistic or BO library such as BoTorch, GPyTorch or PyMC), with code your engineering colleagues are happy to review.
- A track record of methods that were adopted by scientists or shipped in a product, not only prototypes.
- Comfort with ambiguity and the range of work that comes with an early-stage company.

Nice to have

- Formulation informatics experience in pharma, coatings, adhesives, consumer goods or specialty chemicals.
- Familiarity with polymers, composites or bio-based materials, and their processing (extrusion, moulding).
- Hybrid physics-ML modeling, chemometrics or symbolic regression.
- Modeling non-tabular data such as process curves, spectra, set-structured or graph data.
- An MSc or PhD in a quantitative or physical-science field. We care far more about results than pedigree, and a strong record of delivery counts just as much.
- Publications, open-source work or a portfolio we can look at.

What we offer

- Prospect to make a significant impact on sustainability and climate change
- Collaborative and innovative work environment at the intersection of software engineering, materials science and data science
- Competitive salary and benefits package
- Remote work flexibility with core hours aligned to EST
- Potential for equity in an early-stage startup through our employee stock options pool

Pay: $100,000.00-$150,000.00 per year

Benefits:

- Dental care
- Stock options
- Vision care
- Work from home

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Toronto, ON
