Job Title: Hardware Compliance Engineer (EMI/EMC)
Job Description
This role focuses on ensuring that advanced embedded hardware systems meet stringent EMI/EMC and related compliance standards. The Hardware Compliance Engineer works closely with design teams to assess requirements, mitigate compliance risks, guide design decisions, and lead verification and validation activities in both internal and external laboratory environments.
Responsibilities
- Analyze hardware and system requirements to identify compliance risks and define appropriate EMI/EMC and environmental test strategies.
- Provide clear design feedback to engineering teams to ensure alignment with relevant EMI/EMC and military/industry compliance standards.
- Support and participate in EMI/EMC design reviews, contributing technical guidance to improve compliance at the design stage.
- Develop, enhance, and utilize internal laboratory capabilities to de-risk hardware designs prior to formal certification testing.
- Plan, perform, and document internal EMI/EMC, power supply, thermal, vibration, and environmental verification tests.
- Use debugging tools and lab instrumentation to perform hands-on testing, troubleshooting, and root-causes analysis of compliance issues.
- Coordinate and support formal compliance testing at external laboratories, including test planning, scheduling, and on-site technical support as required.
- Document test setups, procedures, and results, and prepare clear, concise test reports and compliance summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware design, systems engineering, and manufacturing, to resolve compliance issues and implement corrective actions.
- Support control goods clearance and ensure adherence to applicable military and industry standards throughout the product lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- Proven hardware experience with hands-on experience in EMI/EMC compliance for embedded systems.
- Demonstrated experience performing EMI/EMC testing and verification in a laboratory workplace.
- Strong hands-on skills in testing, verification, and debugging of hardware systems using appropriate lab tools and instrumentation.
- Practical experience with power supply verification, including analysis of power integrity and compliance-related performance.
- Experience in cable design and debugging, with an understanding of how cabling impacts EMI/EMC performance.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC standards such as EN61000 and/or CISPR, and the ability to apply these standards to real-world designs.
- Familiarity with military standards, including MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1275, and MIL-STD-704, and their application to hardware compliance.
- Experience with thermal, vibration, and environmental testing in accordance with MIL-STD-810 and DO-160.
- Understanding of EM emissions security standards such as SDIP/TEMPEST.
- Experience in electrical engineering or a closely related hardware engineering discipline.
- Ability to document test activities thoroughly and communicate results clearly through structured reports.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience developing and improving internal lab capabilities for EMI/EMC and environmental testing.
- Familiarity with verification testing of thermal systems and related environmental conditions.
- Understanding of control goods clearance processes and working within regulated environments.
- Exposure to power electronics, power supply design, or related hardware disciplines.
- Ability to contribute to technical leadership activities, such as mentoring peers in compliance best practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a methodical approach to diagnosing and resolving compliance issues.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external test laboratories.
Work Environment
The role is based on site five days per week in a hardware-focused laboratory and development environment in Kanata. You will work closely with engineering teams on a variety of advanced embedded hardware products, using lab equipment and debugging tools to perform EMI/EMC, power, thermal, vibration, and environmental testing. The organization promotes an inclusive and supportive culture, with a long average employee tenure and opportunities to work across a wide range of products rather than being confined to a narrow role. The workplace offers on-site amenities, regular social events, and comprehensive benefits, including stock purchase plans, retirement savings program matching, and additional holidays, supporting both professional growth and worklife balance.
