Position Overview:
The Dispatch Supervisor works with Senior leadership to lead and oversee dispatch and customer service operations for T&T; Disposal Services, covering residential, commercial, and roll-off/bin waste collection. the Supervisor directs a team of dispatchers and customer service representatives who handle the majority of day-to-day route coordination and customer contact, while the Supervisor concentrates on operational oversight, emergency and escalated dispatch, compliance, fleet readiness, and service quality.
Reporting to Senior Leadership, the Supervisor keeps collection routes running efficiently — ensuring the right trucks and drivers are deployed, service levels are met, and dispatch decisions align with safety and regulatory standards — while developing the dispatch and customer service teams and the procedures they work within.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Dispatch Operations & Emergency Response
- Oversee the dispatch team's day-to-day route assignment and coordination across residential, commercial, and roll-off/bin collection.
- Own emergency and on-demand dispatch — prioritizing missed pickups, urgent container swaps, and weather or high-volume disruptions, re-sequencing non-urgent stops as needed.
- Track fleet status and availability to guide real-time re-routing and reassignment, minimizing downtime and delays.
- Allocate drivers and trucks across route types and service lines, balancing competing priorities.
- Serve as escalation point for time-sensitive service issues, equipment breakdowns, and driver-in-the-field problems.
Compliance, Safety & Fleet Readiness
- Review Samsara for hours-of-service exceptions, following up with drivers and Safety as needed.
- Partner with HR on driver eligibility and compliance under the driver abstract program.
- Coordinate with the Shop Supervisor on CVIP inspections and scheduled maintenance, factoring unit availability into route planning.
- Ensure dispatch practices align with Alberta Employment Standards and applicable transportation regulations.
- Support the Safety Officer on incident response, work refusals, and return-to-work arrangements.
- Maintain accurate dispatch and telematics/route records for compliance and audit readiness.
Team Leadership, Customer Service & Reporting
- Supervise, schedule, coach, and develop the dispatch and customer service teams; provide clear direction and feedback.
- Develop and refine dispatch procedures, escalation protocols, and on-call coverage models.
- Oversee customer service standards, ensuring proactive communication on schedules, missed pickups, container swaps, and complaint resolution.
- Support onboarding of new drivers, dispatch, and customer service staff on communication protocols and expectations.
- Manage incoming service and sales inquiries — closing noncomplex calls and routing complex calls to sales.
- Report route efficiency, on-time and missed-pickup rates, and complaint resolution to the Director of Operations; coordinate hours/pay inputs with the Controller.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in logistics, supply chain, waste management, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years of dispatch experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or team-leadership role.
- Experience in residential/commercial waste collection, route-based transportation, or a similar service-driven trucking environment strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards and provincial transportation regulations.
- Familiarity with dispatch, telematics,
and GPS/route-optimization platforms (Samsara or Navusoft experience is an asset).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort with reporting and scheduling tools.
- Class 1 or Class 3 licence, or prior driving experience, considered an asset (not required).
- Team leadership, coaching, and the ability to get results through others.
- Calm, decisive judgment under pressure and in emergency or service-disruption situations.
- Solid prioritization and multitasking ability in a fast-moving, interruption-heavy environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication with drivers, customers, and management.
- High attention to detail in record-keeping and compliance.
- Adaptability to shifting priorities across residential and commercial lines of service.
