Role Overview:
We’re looking for a systems-minded Software Engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of software, physical hardware, measurement, and operator workflows.
This is a systems-integration-heavy device software role. The software is part of the machine: it controls hardware, coordinates test sequences, exposes machine state, handles failures and recovery paths, and gives technicians a reliable way to configure, run, and review tests.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain Python/Linux services that control automated testing machines.
- Integrate actuators, sensors, cameras, load cells, strain measurement systems, and other device interfaces.
- Design robust machine state handling, test sequencing, error recovery, retries, interlocks, and diagnostics.
- Build and improve REST/WebSocket APIs that expose machine state clearly and reliably.
- Design and implement React-based operator UI workflows for test setup, live monitoring, diagnostics, recovery, and result review.
- Troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues in test setups and deployed machines.
- Improve logging, traceability, configuration, deployment, and field-debugging tools.
- Help turn customer-specific behavior into maintainable, configurable product software.
- Work closely with mechanical, mechatronics, software, materials, and customer-facing team members.
What You Bring:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally including deployed hardware, lab automation, industrial automation,
or similar systems.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals on Linux, with willingness to work primarily in Python.
- Curiosity and persistence to dig deeply into unfamiliar systems, tools, protocols, hardware interfaces, and machine behavior.
- Systems-level reasoning about machine behavior and software boundaries, especially state, sequencing, recovery paths, hardware interfaces, APIs, and operator-facing workflows.
- Willingness to work across backend/device software and operator-facing workflows, with clear communication and ownership in ambiguous engineering problems.
Nice to Have:
- Hands-on work with NVIDIA Jetson or other Linux edge devices.
- Experience with scientific instruments, materials testing equipment, lab automation, or measurement/control systems.
- Exposure to hardware such as motion systems, cameras, load cells, machine vision, or precision instrumentation.
- Familiarity with materials testing, polymer testing, tensile/tear testing, QC lab workflows, or ASTM/ISO standards.
- Experience building diagnostics, service tools, configuration systems, field-support workflows, or customer-facing troubleshooting tools.
- Experience turning prototypes or customer-specific systems into maintainable product software.
Pay: $80,200.00-$110,000.00 per year
Advantages:
- Dental care
- Employee stock purchase plan
- Stock options
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Kitchener, ON N2M 3M4
