About the Care Team

The successful candidate will join two existing full-time caregivers, a married couple, on a three-person care team.

The team will share responsibility for Angela’s care and provide rotating coverage for one another’s breaks, vacations, and time off to help ensure continuity of care for the client. A cooperative, respectful team dynamic is essential.

About the Role

We are looking for someone who takes initiative and can find meaningful ways to keep Angela engaged throughout the day, while adapting to changing needs, preferences, and energy levels.

The role combines personal care and health support with companionship, daily activity, and helping Angela remain as independent and connected to daily life as possible.

About Angela

You will be looking after my mom, Angela, who has advanced Alzheimer's and herniated lumbar discs that affect her mobility. She follows a careful diet and medication/supplement regime aimed at addressing the underlying factors we are able to influence. In our experience, her condition is mainly affected by two things: diet (it’s very noticeable when she has inflammatory triggers: more confusion, poorer balance, migraines, etc.) and blood flow to the brain.

She has developed vasovagal syncope (fainting when her blood pressure drops too low, for example from too much heat), and we’ve found she does much better when more blood is reaching her head. In the past we did things like legs up the wall to help bring blood back, and saw dramatic improvements in clarity within minutes. Her mobility is more limited now, so this is harder, but we are looking for someone who can help Angela do as much mobility work as possible, along with anything that gets blood and lymph circulating. This will involve regular physio-style exercises and anything else that may help.

We want Angela moving as much as possible every day, and ideally outside as much as possible too. Anything that keeps her within the flow of life, rather than sitting doing nothing, makes a real difference. You are not being hired as a babysitter: think of the role as more like a tutor for a gifted student, someone who brings high-quality engagement alongside the physio and mobility work.

Angela is an interesting character herself. She lived in Indonesia for 20 years, where she set up and ran a bed & breakfast, and her favourite thing was getting people together to talk and share stories. We want to keep bringing socializing, engagement,

and storytelling into her life as much as possible, even (or especially) when she is having difficulty speaking.

Some days are better and some are harder, mainly depending on diet, which we are still fine-tuning as we work on the root causes of some of her issues. The main thing to keep in mind is that even when Angela’s words aren’t right, her meaning often is. She is still communicating meaningfully, but it takes a special something to appreciate and understand her. Laughter is probably among the best medicines we can give her right now, so a good sense of humour is very important.

Physio & Active Living (Top Priority)

Keeping Angela moving is the most important part of this role. We are looking for someone who will help her rebuild muscle mass, reduce her risk of falls, move her body and circulate blood and lymph, and make movement a consistent, enjoyable part of every day. You will be:

- Leading daily exercise sessions from Angela’s physiotherapist-prescribed home program, including strength, balance, stretching, and range of motion
- Daily walks and outdoor activity, adapted to her energy, mobility, and the weather
- Building movement into the day through gardening, music, dance, and everyday tasks
- Attending physiotherapy appointments to learn new exercises, and keeping the program consistent across Toronto, the Bahamas, and Nova Scotia
- Tracking progress and reporting changes in strength, balance, or pain to the family and physiotherapist

Responsibilities

- Providing meaningful cognitive, social, and recreational engagement
- Accompanying Angela to health-related appointments
- Assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and other activities of daily living
- Providing incontinence care
- Assisting with mobility, transfers, and fall prevention
- Checking and recording vital signs as required
- Recognizing changes in condition and knowing when to escalate concerns
- Responding appropriately to medical events and emergencies within the scope of training
- Maintaining a daily care log and communicating relevant updates, observations, and concerns with the family
- Light housekeeping related to care, including laundry and changing linens

Nutrition & Meal Planning

Nutrition is an important part of Angela’s care. The successful candidate should be knowledgeable about healthy meal planning and comfortable working within established dietary restrictions.

Responsibilities in this area include: collaborating on weekly menu planning, ensuring dietary restrictions are followed consistently, preparing healthy meals when needed, and helping maintain consistency in diet across locations.

Qualifications

- PSW certificate, Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist Assistant (PTA/OTA) diploma, kinesiology degree, or nursing qualification (RPN/RN)
- Experience with physiotherapy, rehab, or exercise programs, ideally with older adults (a strong asset)
- Experience supporting someone with dementia or cognitive impairment
- Dementia-specific training, such as U-First! and/or GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approaches in Dementia Care), or equivalent
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR, Level C
- A clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed within the last 12 months
- A valid driver’s licence
- Physically able to safely assist with transfers, mobility, and lifting as required
- Non-smoker
- Strong references

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is warm, engaging, proactive, flexible, physically active, and genuinely enjoys spending time with others. The successful candidate should be comfortable with frequent travel and adapting to changing locations and schedules throughout the year.

Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who can accompany Angela through this stage of life with patience, compassion, warmth, and sensitivity, while continuing to support independence and a strong sense of self.

An interest in music, art, and other creative activities would be especially welcome. We would love to find someone who can naturally bring these things into day-to-day life in ways that create enjoyment, expression, and connection.

Angela has always had a free-spirited, creative side and a deep appreciation for nature and life’s simple beauties. She loves flowers, gardening, birdwatching, music, art, cooking, and travel, and has spent much of her life creating beauty around her through the places she has lived and the experiences she has created for others. We hope to find someone who can help weave those things into everyday life in simple, thoughtful ways and create moments of familiarity, joy, and comfort.

To Apply

Please apply through Indeed with your CV and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to send a short (1–2 minute) voice memo or video introducing themselves and telling us about a time they helped someone stay active or follow an exercise routine.

We read every application personally. Thank you
