GeoTerra is a growing, employee-owned engineering and environmental consulting firm providing geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeological, materials testing, and remediation services. We also own and operate our own water treatment units, allowing us to deliver groundwater treatment and discharge solutions in-house. With offices in Toronto, Ottawa, and Morocco, our team delivers projects in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and across Africa.

We work closely with developers, contractors, property owners, and public-sector clients to deliver practical solutions from initial investigations through construction.

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Geotechnical Team Lead, based in our Toronto or Ottawa office, who wants to build something: grow a geotechnical team, develop new and existing client relationships, and expand our geotechnical services.

The prospect

This role combines technical leadership, project management, team development, and business development. You will lead geotechnical investigations and provide senior engineering advice while taking real ownership of developing the team behind the practice and the client base it serves.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working directly with clients and contractors, making sound engineering decisions, and developing practical recommendations that address construction conditions, budgets, and schedules, and who is motivated by growing a practice, not just delivering projects.

Key responsibilities

- Lead geotechnical investigations for railway, high-rise, residential, commercial, infrastructure, and industrial projects.
- Develop investigation programs, including boreholes, test pits, in situ testing, instrumentation, and laboratory testing.
- Interpret subsurface conditions and provide recommendations and design for shallow foundations, raft foundations, pile and other deep foundations, settlement, earthworks, pavement structures, retaining walls, and excavation support.
- Assess challenging ground conditions, including sensitive clays, compressible soils,



uncontrolled fill, shallow bedrock, and groundwater.
- Lead or oversee analyses related to bearing resistance, settlement, slope stability, lateral earth pressures, and excavation performance.
- Prepare, review, and authenticate geotechnical reports and engineering deliverables within your area of professional competence.
- Provide senior support during construction, including foundation reviews, subgrade assessments, excavation reviews, and resolution of unexpected ground conditions.
- Collaborate with structural engineers, civil engineers, architects, and contractors, as well as our hydrogeology, environmental, and materials testing teams, to deliver integrated solutions.
- Manage project scopes, budgets, schedules, and client communications.
- Build and grow client relationships, prepare proposals, and pursue recent opportunities.
- Mentor and develop staff, lead recruitment, and establish consistent technical and quality standards.
- Work with company leadership to grow the geotechnical practice and achieve revenue, profitability, and service objectives.

Qualifications

- Degree in civil or geological engineering. A graduate degree in geotechnical engineering is an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
- At least 10 years of relevant geotechnical consulting experience, including leading investigations and managing projects.
- Strong experience with deep foundation design (including piles and rafts), excavation support, slope stability, and interpretation of subsurface and laboratory data.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, and applicable OPSS standards.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and review clear, technically sound reports.
- Experience working directly with developers, contractors,



consultants, municipalities, and regulatory agencies.
- Strong commercial judgment and the ability to balance technical requirements with schedules and budgets.
- A genuine interest in building a team and growing a client base, with a track record of developing staff and winning repeat or new work.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites in Ontario and Quebec, with occasional international travel.

Assets: Experience with railway projects, sensitive Champlain Sea clays, high-rise deep foundations and shoring design, complex urban excavations, numerical modelling (e.g., PLAXIS, Slide), or instrumentation and monitoring programs. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset, particularly for our Ottawa and Montreal work and collaboration with our Morocco team.
