Mechanical Design & Laser Applications Engineer
Apeiron Manufacturing Inc. | Delhi / Courtland, Ontario
About Apeiron Manufacturing
Apeiron Manufacturing is a growing Ontario manufacturing company providing CNC machining, sheet and tube laser cutting, fabrication, welding, industrial painting, and related manufacturing services.
We are building a team of capable, accountable people who want to grow with the company and take pride in producing quality work. We operate in a fast-paced, practical manufacturing environment where attention to detail, communication, continuous improvement, and personal ownership matter.
We are looking for a Mechanical Design & Laser Applications Engineer who can combine mechanical design skills with hands-on manufacturing knowledge to support our flatbed sheet laser and tube laser operations.
The Role
This is not a desk-only engineering position.
The successful candidate will be responsible for taking customer drawings, CAD files, concepts, and manufacturing requirements and turning them into production-ready designs and laser programs.
You will work closely with estimating, production, welding/fabrication, quality, and management to ensure parts are designed and programmed correctly, efficiently, and economically.
You should be comfortable working directly with the shop floor, solving manufacturing problems, and taking responsibility for getting jobs from engineering through production.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and modify 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks
- Review customer drawings, STEP files, DXF files, models, specifications, and other technical information
- Prepare production-ready files for flatbed laser cutting
- Prepare and program parts for tube laser cutting
- Develop efficient nesting and cutting strategies to maximize material utilization and machine productivity
- Convert customer designs into manufacturable parts and assemblies
- Design sheet metal components, welded fabrications, brackets, frames, fixtures, and other custom manufactured products
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to reduce manufacturing time and cost
- Review tolerances, bend allowances, weld requirements, hole locations, fit-up conditions, and assembly requirements
- Identify potential manufacturing problems before the job reaches the shop floor
- Develop and maintain accurate drawings, revisions, bills of material, routing information, and production documentation
- Assist estimating with material requirements, manufacturing methods, cycle-time assumptions, and technical feasibility
- Support laser operators during new-job setup and first-piece production
- Troubleshoot programming, fit-up, dimensional, and manufacturing issues
- Work with fabrication and welding personnel to improve part design and assembly efficiency
- Develop fixtures, gauges, templates, and manufacturing aids where required
- Maintain organized engineering files and revision control
- Participate in first article inspections and quality reviews
- Support continuous-improvement projects involving setup reduction, material utilization, throughput, quality, and process reliability
- Communicate problems immediately rather than allowing an issue to continue through production
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field
- Solid working knowledge of SolidWorks
- Experience producing professional manufacturing drawings
- Good understanding of GD&T;, dimensional tolerances, fits, and manufacturing drawings
- Understanding of sheet metal and fabricated-part design
- Ability to work with DXF, DWG, STEP and other common CAD formats
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Strong computer and technical documentation skills
- Ability to interpret customer drawings and specifications accurately
Preferred Experience
Experience in any of the following would be considered a strong asset:
- Flatbed fiber laser programming
- Tube laser programming
- CAD/CAM or nesting software
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Structural tube and profile cutting
- Press brake forming
- Welding and welded assemblies
- CNC machining
- Fixture design
- SolidWorks Sheet Metal
- Manufacturing estimating
- ERP/MRP systems
- ISO 9001 or AS9100 manufacturing environments
Experience with our exact laser programming software is not mandatory if you have strong CAD/CAM fundamentals and are capable of learning quickly.
The Person We Are Looking For
Technical ability is important, but how you work is equally important to us.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is extremely detail-oriented
- Takes ownership of their work from beginning to completion
- Checks their work instead of assuming it is correct
- Is comfortable being accountable for results
- Communicates problems early
- Is willing to ask questions when something is unclear
- Learns quickly and actively wants to improve
- Understands that manufacturing decisions affect material, labour, machine time, and ultimately the customer
- Looks for practical and cost-effective solutions rather than automatically choosing the most expensive solution
- Can balance engineering perfection with real-world manufacturing requirements
- Is organized and disciplined with drawings, revisions, files, and documentation
- Works effectively with machinists, laser operators, welders, painters, estimators, and management
- Is willing to spend time on the manufacturing floor rather than remaining behind a desk
- Responds constructively when mistakes or problems are identified
- Wants responsibility and is willing to earn greater responsibility over time
- Has a strong work ethic and is willing to put in the effort required to help build a growing manufacturing company
- Wants to develop professionally and grow with the team and company
We value employees who see a problem and think:
“How can I help solve this?”
rather than:
“That isn't my responsibility.”
What Success Looks Like
A successful person in this role will help us:
- Reduce engineering and programming errors
- Reduce laser setup time
- Improve material utilization and nesting efficiency
- Reduce scrap and rework
- Improve first-pass yield
- Release accurate jobs to production
- Improve communication between engineering and the shop floor
- Improve manufacturability before production begins
- Standardize repeat jobs and manufacturing methods
- Increase throughput without sacrificing quality
- Build better engineering and manufacturing systems as the company grows
Growth Opportunity
This position has significant room for growth.
For the right person, the role can develop beyond CAD and laser programming into areas such as:
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Process Engineering
- Automation
- Production Engineering
- Estimating
- New Product Introduction
- Continuous Improvement
- Engineering Leadership
- Operations Management
We are looking for someone who wants to build something over the long term, not simply perform the minimum requirements of a job description.
Work Environment
This position involves a combination of office engineering work and regular interaction with the manufacturing floor.
You will work closely with production personnel and are expected to see how parts are actually manufactured, understand production challenges, and continuously improve the connection between design, programming, and manufacturing.
