Job DescriptionJob Description Our client is hiring a District Sales Manager to sell abrasives, power sanders, vacuum hose and polish to retailers and distributors (paint stores, tool stores and specialty retailers) and to create pull-through demand with end-user painters, contractors and drywallers. This is a field-based territory role covering the Eastern GTA, Eastern Ontario and Northern Ontario. The role is a balance between servicing existing accounts and winning current ones, and you inherit an existing client base. Leads come from the existing book of accounts plus your own prospecting in the territory. You will report to the Regional Sales Manager, Ontario. The base salary is $80,000–$90,000 CAD plus bonuses.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Base salary: $80,000–$90,000 CAD
- Bonus: 20% bonus paid three times a year. There is no commission.
- Car allowance: a fixed monthly amount plus a per-kilometre variable portion
- Phone and laptop
- Opportunities to learn, grow and advance within the company
THE COMPANY & CULTURE
Our client is the Canadian arm of a European manufacturer of abrasives, power sanders and polish used in surface finishing. The company has been in business for about 80 years (founded around 1946), is private equity-backed, and has about 1,600 employees company-wide, 22 of them in Canada. Canadian head office is in the Montreal, QC area. It is a scale-up growing 10–15% annually and working to gain market share against larger competitors. It sells to collision repair, industrial manufacturing and retail/trade customers. Company-wide yearly turnover is less than 10% and average tenure is 3–5 years. Open and consistent communication is a key part of the teamwork culture, and management is hands-off and empowering.
OFFICE LOCATION & SALES TERRITORY
- Office: Field-based, home office. Canadian head office is in the Montreal, QC area.
- Work arrangement: Field-based territory role. Home office, on the road visiting distributors and customers. Monday morning and Friday afternoon are planning and admin days.
- Sales territory: Eastern GTA (from mid-GTA Toronto east), Eastern Ontario to the eastern border of Ottawa, and Northern Ontario. Most of the business is in the eastern GTA, where the company has a large existing client base, with further opportunity in Toronto.
- Overnight travel: Typically a couple of days once a month, sometimes more and sometimes less depending on promotional seasons. Most of the territory can be done as day trips.
EXPERIENCE, BACKGROUND & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- 3–5+ years of outside sales experience; strong, younger candidates with less experience will be considered
- Field territory sales with face-to-face customer calls; you have run a territory, not phone-based
- Industry background in hardware, paint, tools, building supply, woodworking or a related trade or retail channel is preferred
- Abrasive or sandpaper experience is not required; the company will train you on product
- Retail experience is preferred: selling to retailers and dealers, growing accounts, sell-through and merchandising. Key or national retail account experience is an asset.
- Comfortable demonstrating power tools and abrasives to trades and store staff; experience delivering training and in-store events
- Post-secondary education is preferred, not required
- Bilingual English/French is an asset for Ottawa and Eastern Ontario
- Valid driver's licence and clean driving record; able to stand and walk for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs
- You live a commute away from the Eastern GTA (Scarborough), where the company has a large hub (preference only)
