Job Description
On behalf of our client, Affinity is seeking an experienced Senior Business Analyst to support the replacement and modernization of its Retail Loan Origination System. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on eliciting, analyzing, documenting, and validating business requirements across the end-to-end lending lifecycle. The successful candidate will work closely with lending teams, product owners, operations, technology, vendors, and quality assurance to translate business needs into clear processes, business rules, functional requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria. The ideal candidate brings a strong core Business Analysis background, practical experience in banking or lending, and the ability to work independently within a complex transformation program.
Key Responsibilities
Business Analysis & Requirements Management
- Plan and conduct discovery sessions, stakeholder interviews, workshops, and requirements walkthroughs.
- Elicit, analyze, document, and validate business, functional, non-functional, data, and reporting requirements.
- Translate business needs into clear requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules, and functional specifications.
- Maintain requirements traceability from business objectives through design, testing, and implementation.
- Identify requirement gaps, conflicts, dependencies, risks, and impacts, and drive them to resolution.
- Facilitate story decomposition and backlog refinement activities to ensure requirements are sufficiently detailed and ready for delivery.
- Develop clear, concise, and testable user stories that enable efficient delivery by product, technology, and quality assurance teams.
- Perform functional decomposition of complex lending processes and business capabilities into epics, features, user stories, business rules, and acceptance criteria. Lending Process & Business Analysis
- Analyze current-state and future-state retail lending processes, including application intake, credit adjudication, underwriting, documentation, funding, servicing handoffs, and exception handling.
- Develop process maps, customer and employee journeys, decision flows, use cases, and operating procedures.
- Partner with lending subject matter experts to clarify policies, controls, business rules, and regulatory or operational requirements.
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve the member and employee experience, and reduce manual effort. Agile Delivery & Backlog Support
- Create and refine high-quality user stories and acceptance criteria in Azure DevOps.
- Work with Product Owners to support backlog prioritization, story mapping,
release planning, and definition of Minimum Viable Product scope.
- Participate actively in backlog refinement, sprint planning, showcases, and retrospectives as the requirements subject matter expert.
- Clarify requirements for designers, developers, architects, vendors, and testers throughout delivery. Solution, Data & Integration Analysis
- Assess how business processes and requirements translate across user interfaces, workflows, data, APIs, and downstream systems.
- Document data requirements, source-to-target mappings, interface needs, and business validation rules.
- Review solution designs and vendor outputs to confirm alignment with approved business requirements.
- Collaborate with technical teams on API and integration requirements; deep solution architecture ownership is not expected. Testing & Implementation Support
- Develop business scenarios, acceptance criteria, and traceability to support System Integration Testing and User Acceptance Testing.
- Support test planning, test case review, defect triage, business validation, and readiness activities.
- Assist business stakeholders with UAT execution, issue clarification, process documentation, and implementation preparation.
- Confirm that delivered capabilities meet agreed business outcomes and requirements. Stakeholder Collaboration
- Build effective working relationships with lending operations, product, risk, compliance, technology, data, quality assurance, and vendor teams.
- Facilitate requirements reviews and decision sessions, capture outcomes, and follow through on open items.
- Communicate requirements, options, impacts, dependencies, and issues clearly to both business and technical audiences.
- Operate primarily as a senior individual contributor rather than as a BA people leader or BA practice lead. Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working as a senior individual contributor on complex technology, digital, or system replacement initiatives.
- Experience supporting the full requirements lifecycle, including traceability, change control, testing, and implementation.
- Practical experience working in Agile or hybrid delivery environments and using Azure DevOps or a comparable backlog management tool.
- Excellent facilitation,
analytical thinking, problem-solving, written communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, organize complex information, and deliver high-quality analysis with limited oversight.
- Preference for candidates based in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland who can participate in a hybrid working model.
- Strong ability to translate business objectives and lending processes into detailed backlog items that are explicit, testable, and traceable through delivery and implementation.
- Proven experience writing high-quality user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules, and process requirements suitable for Agile delivery teams.
- Demonstrated expertise in functional decomposition, including the ability to break down complex business capabilities, processes, and requirements into manageable epics, features, user stories, and acceptance criteria. Top Skills Necessary
- 8+ years of progressive Business Analysis experience, with substantial recent experience performing hands-on requirements and process analysis including proven capability in functional decomposition, business rules, use cases, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
- 3+ years of experience in banking, credit unions, lending, loan origination, underwriting, adjudication, or related financial services or retail lending products such as personal loans, lines of credit, mortgages, or secured lending.
- Experience implementing, replacing, or integrating, at least one, Loan Origination System or other banking platform.
- 3+ years of hands-on Azure DevOps experience, particularly Azure Boards for epics, features, stories, acceptance criteria, backlog management and traceability.
