About the Role
Toronto Academy of Education is a career-focused education and training institution offering diploma, certificate, and professional development programs, including healthcare, administrative, and other industry-focused training. We are developing a customized Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) to support our expanding range of instructor-led online certificate programs, synchronous virtual classes, interactive learning modules, assessments, student progress tracking, and automated administrative processes. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Moodle LMS Developer & Systems Administrator who can work collaboratively with our internal team to design, build, customize, deploy, and maintain this platform. This is a technical implementation role, not simply a Moodle content-uploading or course administration position.
Key Responsibilities
1. Moodle LMS Development and Configuration
· Install, configure, and deploy a complete self-hosted Moodle LMS environment.
· Build and customize the LMS architecture to support multiple certificate and professional training programs.
· Configure course structures, learning pathways, student dashboards, instructor dashboards, permissions, enrolment methods, and administration settings.
· Develop or customize Moodle themes to create a modern, responsive, professional learning experience consistent with our institutional branding.
· Evaluate, install, configure, and maintain Moodle plugins, including developing custom functionality where required. 2. VPS Hosting, Server Administration and Database Management
· Set up and maintain Moodle on a Linux-based VPS or suitable hosting infrastructure.
· Configure web servers, PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, SSL certificates, DNS, scheduled tasks, and associated technical services.
· Manage system security, performance optimization, monitoring, backups, database maintenance, and disaster recovery.
· Establish appropriate development, staging, and production environments.
· Troubleshoot hosting, application, plugin, and database issues.
· Recommend scalable and cost-effective infrastructure based on platform usage and growth. 3. Course Development and Interactive Learning
· Build reusable Moodle course templates for certificate and professional training programs.
· Configure module-based learning with videos, downloadable resources, presentations, assignments, quizzes, exams, and interactive activities.
· Implement conditional access, module prerequisites, activity completion, and course progress tracking.
· Integrate interactive learning tools such as H5P, SCORM, and other compatible learning technologies.
· Develop automated grading, feedback, attendance tracking, and reporting where appropriate.
· Configure course completion requirements and automatic certificate generation. 4. Live Online Learning and Video Integration
· Integrate suitable virtual classroom platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams,
BigBlueButton, or other compatible services.
· Support scheduled live instructor-led classes, student access, calendar integration, and attendance tracking.
· Configure reliable access to recorded lessons and supplementary learning videos.
· Help establish workflows for instructors to conduct, manage, and monitor synchronous online training. 5. Payment Gateway Integration and Automation
· Integrate suitable payment gateways, preferably Stripe, for secure online course payments.
· Configure paid enrolment and automatic course access following successful payment.
· Support payment workflows such as course purchases, payment plans, discount codes, and instalments where technically feasible.
· Configure automated transaction notifications, enrolment confirmations, and payment-related communication.
· Connect payment status with student enrolment and access permissions.
· Troubleshoot payment and enrolment synchronization issues. 6. Gamification and Student Engagement
· Implement suitable gamification features to improve student engagement and learning motivation.
· Configure achievement badges, completion milestones, progress indicators, and other learning incentives.
· Explore interactive challenges, points, rewards, and learning pathways using supported Moodle capabilities or extensions.
· Recommend practical improvements to student engagement, retention, and course completion. 7. Automation, Integrations and Reporting
· Automate appropriate workflows for student enrolment, onboarding, reminders, attendance, assessments, and certification.
· Configure email notifications and event-triggered workflows.
· Integrate Moodle with existing websites, payment services, and other systems where required.
· Develop useful reports and dashboards for administrators and instructors.
· Support API-based integrations and custom development as the platform evolves. 8. Collaboration, Documentation and Ongoing Support
· Work directly with our internal team to plan, develop, test, and launch the platform in clearly defined stages.
· Provide regular updates and explain technical decisions and implementation requirements.
· Maintain clear documentation of hosting infrastructure, configurations, plugins, integrations, and custom development.
· Train designated team members to manage courses, users, enrolments, and everyday LMS operations.
· Follow version-control and structured change-management practices.
· Support testing, deployment, troubleshooting, updates, and ongoing improvements. Required Qualifications
· Proven hands-on experience developing, deploying, and maintaining Moodle LMS installations.
· Strong understanding of Moodle architecture, administration, plugins, themes, and customization.
· Experience with PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL.
· Practical experience administering Linux VPS environments, web servers, and relational databases.
· Experience with course configuration, assessments, user roles, enrolment workflows, and LMS reporting.
· Familiarity with Moodle integrations, web services, APIs, and automated processes.
· Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
· Ability to independently implement technical solutions while collaborating closely with a non-developer internal team.
· Demonstrable experience completing real Moodle implementation or customization projects. Preferred Qualifications
· Experience integrating Stripe or comparable payment gateways with Moodle.
· Experience with live learning platforms, video hosting, and virtual classroom integrations.
· Familiarity with H5P, SCORM, gamification, badges, and automated certificates.
· Experience developing custom Moodle plugins or themes.
· Knowledge of secure hosting, backup strategies, performance optimization, and LMS scalability.
· Previous experience supporting private career colleges, training institutions, or professional certification programs.
· Familiarity with Git, deployment workflows, and structured project documentation.
· Experience with OVH or comparable VPS providers. Our Working Approach We are looking for a technical partner who is comfortable building the platform alongside our internal team rather than working entirely independently with limited visibility. Our team will participate in planning, testing, administration, and ongoing improvements. The selected developer will be expected to explain implementation decisions, maintain transparent development practices, and provide practical knowledge transfer. The institution must retain ownership and administrative control of its hosting accounts, database, Moodle installation, custom-developed code, configurations, and associated integrations. We value maintainable solutions, transparent communication, security, and long-term reliability over unnecessary technical complexity.
What We Offer
· Opportunity to build and shape a customized learning platform from the ground up.
· Direct collaboration with an education and technology-focused team.
· A flexible project-based working arrangement.
· Prospect for continued involvement in future development, integrations, optimization, and platform maintenance.
· Scope to contribute technical recommendations and innovative learning features.
