About the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology

The Faculty of Arts houses the following departments: Economics, Justice & Policy Studies; English, Languages & Cultures; General Education; Humanities; Interior Design; Psychology; and Sociology & Anthropology. Our combined Sociology and Anthropology department hosts faculty who pursue diverse research and teaching interests but work collaboratively to ensure the success of both disciplines. In our four-field Anthropology department-unit, we emphasize experiential learning, including international field schools, local field trips, as well as ethnographic and laboratory methods. Department facilities include both research and teaching laboratories staffed by a laboratory instructor and a laboratory coordinator. Our collections are diverse and growing, and include a variety of materials for archaeological and biological anthropological instruction.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts at Mount Royal University invites applications for a tenure-track position in archaeology, commencing on July 1, 2027, at the Rank of Assistant Professor, subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will be hired into the teaching/scholarship/service work pattern (TSS). The TSS work pattern has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community.

We seek applicants with expertise in archaeological methods and an active field or laboratory research program. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory, core, and advanced-level courses, including ANTH-2104 (Methods in Archaeology) and a third-year methods course.

Additionally, preference will be given to applicants with experience with archaeological field school development and administration, cultural resource management, community-engaged archaeology in Canada, experiential learning, or analytical laboratory methods that complement our current faculty, such as zooarchaeology. Holding an excavation permit, or the ability to obtain one, in Canada is an asset but not required. A PhD in archaeology or anthropology at the time of hire is desired, but candidates near completion will be considered. A commitment to decolonial and anti-racist perspectives in the curriculum is a priority.

If you have questions regarding the position, contact Mary-Lee Mulholland, Chair, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, at [email protected]

Note: Faculty positions are not part of the hybrid work program.
