Wage: $22.00–$25.00/hour, based on experience

ROTATING TWO-WEEK SCHEDULE
Week 1: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
Week 2: Monday–Wednesday, 7:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

About the Role

Our family is seeking an experienced, compassionate, and dependable support worker to join our adult son’s team. He is non-speaking and lives with autism, OCD, anxiety, and epilepsy. You will work alongside another support worker, providing 2:1 support in our family home and the community.

We are looking for someone who builds trust, takes initiative, and creates opportunities for engagement, confidence, joy, and independence while respecting his choices, communication, and need for personal space.

Key Responsibilities

Individualized Support and Meaningful Engagement

- Build a trusting, positive relationship through consistent, respectful, and individualized interactions.
- Recognize and respond to nonverbal communication, emotional cues, preferences, and changing support needs.
- Encourage meaningful engagement through preferred activities, play, music, movement, and everyday interactions.
- Respect personal space and individual choice, offering gentle opportunities to participate without pressure.

Daily Living and Personal Hygiene

- Provide hands-on assistance with grooming, personal hygiene, and daily living routines.
- Encourage participation and independence through patience, positive reinforcement, and individualized support.
- Support easy meal preparation, food choices, and daily routines while respecting preferences and comfort levels.

Community Inclusion and Social Participation

- Plan and participate in outings that promote positive experiences, confidence, and meaningful community inclusion.
- Introduce new environments and activities gradually, recognizing sensory, emotional, and environmental stressors.
- Adapt, shorten,

or reschedule activities according to readiness, recognizing that small steps are meaningful progress.
- Coordinate transportation, logistics, and safety considerations with the second support worker.

Behaviour Support and Safety

- Recognize early signs of distress and respond with calm, proactive, non-confrontational support.
- Follow individualized Behaviour Support Plans, de-escalation strategies, epilepsy protocols, and established safety and emergency procedures.
- Maintain situational awareness and allow appropriate time and space for emotional regulation.
- Prioritize safety and dignity, recognize when additional assistance is needed, and participate in post-incident communication and debriefing.

Teamwork and Household Support

- Work collaboratively within a 2:1 support model, maintaining clear communication and shared responsibilities.
- Complete accurate daily documentation of activities, personal care, behavioural observations, and progress toward goals.
- Contribute to the smooth running of the family household through meal preparation, dishes, laundry, tidying shared spaces, organizing supplies, and other agreed-upon household tasks.
- Work comfortably and safely in a family home with a large, energetic dog.
- Communicate professionally with family members and the support team.

Initiative During Quieter Periods

Our son sometimes chooses time alone or declines activities. Staff are expected to respect his space while remaining attentive, available, and responsive within his support plan.

These periods are an opportunity to plan meaningful activities and outings, prepare materials and visual supports, explore his interests, complete documentation, and contribute to household routines.

Staff should continually look for thoughtful ways to support future engagement, confidence, joy, and independence, adapting their approach to his cues and readiness.

We are seeking someone who uses working time purposefully and takes initiative without needing constant direction.

Experience and Qualities

- Experience supporting adults with autism and complex communication and behavioural needs.
- Relevant behaviour support and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
- Emotional maturity, sound judgment, patience, and adaptability.
- Ability to remain calm during challenging situations and follow individualized support plans.
- Strong observation, communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable transportation to Duffield. A minivan is provided to transport our son on community outings.
- An interest in a consistent, long-term commitment.

Relevant education, practical experience, and meaningful life experience are valued. Experience with positive behaviour support and community-based support is strongly preferred.

Safety and Support Expectations

This position involves supporting a young adult who may experience significant emotional dysregulation, including behaviours that present physical safety risks.

Our approach emphasizes prevention, recognizing early warning signs, reducing environmental stressors, and allowing time and space for emotional regulation.

We believe successful support is measured by promoting safety, dignity, trust, independence, joy, and meaningful progress over time.

Employment Details

This is an employee position with WCB coverage and employer CPP and EI contributions. Extended health benefits are not provided.
