This is a hands-on senior engineering role at a small startup, mostly across Android, web and backend work, with some exposure to hardware, firmware and machine learning. A robust candidate has at least five years of experience, has owned systems from start to finish, and is comfortable picking up unfamiliar areas rapid. Mentoring junior developers is part of the job, and the work is based in Winnipeg or requires relocating there.
How it fits the AI era
The product relies on computer vision to recognize TV commercials, so much of the engineering supports a system that watches live video and reacts to it. AI tools can speed up routine coding, testing and debugging, but deciding what to build, designing systems that hold up across thousands of devices, and guiding teammates stay with people. The detection approach described is rule based rather than a trained model, so robust fundamentals matter as much as ML knowledge.
How it builds AI experience
Working here would mean touching a real computer vision pipeline running on custom hardware in thousands of venues, which is rare hands-on experience with AI at the edge. Someone preparing could practice with OpenCV on video streams, learn how devices are monitored and updated in the field, and build a small project that classifies frames from a live feed.
