Candidates must hold full-time academic appointments in the Faculty of Architecture and have proven records of excellence in community-engaged teaching, research, or service.

Candidates must possess strong leadership qualities and demonstrate a clear commitment to supporting students and faculty members to develop and sustain partnerships with community organizations, practitioners, the professions, the City, and the Province for research, field work, studio and course projects, continuing education, service opportunities, etc. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential; and collaborative leadership, mentorship, and sensitivity to student and faculty concerns are requisite.

An ability to represent the Faculty of Architecture in the context of university, professional, and public venues is central to the position. Previous administrative experience in academic or professional practice environments is preferred.

Duties include, but are not exclusive to, the following:

Leading the Community Design and Planning Centre (CDPC)

- Seek ongoing funding (grants, sponsorships, fees for service, etc.)
- Organize training for students, faculty, and others in techniques of engagement
- Raise the profile of the CDPC by hosting events and public discussions

- Pursue designation as a recognized UM Centre

Supporting the Co-op Program

- Work with the Partners Program to oversee the Co-op program to support students’ training and opportunities for employment experience
- Assist with building network of firms offering Co-op experiences

Providing Faculty Support

- Establish a FAUM community engagement and outreach hub, including a list of relevant projects and research, to ensure projects are not unintentionally overlapping or placing demand on communities and to find synergies for collaborative projects
- Provide support to faculty taking on community engagement projects in studios and courses
- Coordinate workshops and sessions to share experiences with community engaged projects and research
- Provide guidance on ethics issues relevant to work with communities
- Assist in finding funding for community engaged work (in collaboration with ADR)

Providing Student Support

- Build and connect students with curricular and extracurricular opportunities to develop engagement skills
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean (Research) to find funding for students to develop community engagement skills

This position reports to the Dean and provides regular reports to Faculty Council. Applications must be made through the UM Careers portal and include a current CV and a statement briefly addressing your viewpoint regarding the goals of the position and outlining your qualifications.

Please send questions by email to [email protected] and cc’d to Tara Vogelsang, [email protected].
