Mechanical Piping Designer

Location: Calgary, Alberta | Office and workshop environment

About the role

Our client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Piping Designer to support the design and delivery of pilot-scale and prototype mechanical systems. This hands-on role combines mechanical design and drafting with direct involvement in fabrication, assembly and testing.

You will work closely with engineers, vendors, fabricators and field teams to develop practical designs that are straightforward to build, operate and maintain. The role suits someone who enjoys solving technical problems, working with evolving requirements and seeing designs through from concept to implementation.

Key responsibilities

· Develop layouts and designs for pilot plants and modular systems, including skids and containerized units.

· Create 3D models covering equipment layouts, pipe routing, structural steel and detailed mechanical equipment design.

· Prepare complete, fabrication-ready drawing packages, including general arrangement drawings, piping isometrics, weld details, machined parts and mechanical assemblies.

· Coordinate with engineers, vendors and fabricators to confirm design requirements and ensure designs are practical and buildable.

· Provide hands-on support in the workshop during fabrication, assembly and testing.

· Incorporate fabrication and field feedback into design revisions and improvements.

· Check drawings for accuracy, completeness and consistency before release, applying established drafting standards and best practices.

· Manage changing priorities and design requirements while maintaining quality and following work through to completion.

Qualifications and experience

· Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Design, Drafting Technology or a related field.

· At least five years of hands-on mechanical design and drafting experience in industrial environments, including taking designs from concept through fabrication and field implementation.

· Direct exposure to fabrication processes such as welding, machining and assembly,



and/or field installation.

· Experience in at least one of the following areas; experience across multiple areas is preferred: piping systems, pressure equipment, structural and skid design, or tanks and general process equipment.

· Relevant equipment experience may include small-bore welded and plastic piping, tubing systems such as Swagelok, vessels, piping spools, pressure-retaining components, pumps, heat exchangers and instruments.

Technical skills

· Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD Plant 3D; experience with equivalent 3D CAD platforms will be considered.

· Ability to produce clear, complete and unambiguous fabrication drawings, with sound dimensioning, datum selection and realistic tolerances.

· Practical understanding of access, fit-up, assembly and operability requirements.

· Working knowledge of applicable pressure equipment, piping and welding codes, as well as drafting standards.

· General familiarity with common ASTM materials and specifications.

Work environment

This position combines office-based design work with active involvement in a Calgary workshop. A willingness to support fabrication, assembly and testing directly is essential.
