About Us

Diverse Learners Tutoring specializes in individualized, evidence-based instruction for students with learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other learning challenges.

Founded by an educator with a Master's degree in Learning Disabilities and Orton–Gillingham training, our practice emphasizes structured literacy, individualized programming, ongoing assessment, and collaboration between tutors and families.

As our team continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Orton–Gillingham practitioner who is confident teaching both foundational literacy skills and advanced language concepts, particularly morphology and multisyllabic word reading.

Position Overview

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Orton–Gillingham tutor to provide individualized literacy instruction to elementary and secondary students with reading and spelling difficulties.

The ideal candidate has completed formal Orton–Gillingham training, including a supervised practicum, and is comfortable working with older students who require more advanced literacy intervention.

This position is particularly suited to an educator who understands how to move students beyond foundational phonics into advanced decoding, spelling, syllable division, and morphological awareness. Experience supporting written expression is also highly valued.

We also value collaboration and professional knowledge-sharing. We are looking for someone who enjoys exchanging teaching ideas, discussing student progress, and sharing instructional strategies and resources with the founder and other tutors. While tutors are responsible for delivering their own lessons, we encourage ongoing collaboration to ensure students receive consistent, high-quality instruction.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver individualized, systematic, explicit, and multisensory literacy instruction using the Orton–Gillingham approach.
- Teach phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, encoding, syllable types, and syllable division.
- Provide explicit instruction in morphology, including prefixes, suffixes, Latin roots, Greek combining forms, and word structure.
- Support students with advanced multisyllabic word reading, spelling, vocabulary,

and reading fluency.
- Support the development of written expression skills, including sentence construction, grammar, paragraph organization, and written responses, where appropriate to the tutor's expertise.
- Use diagnostic and ongoing assessments to identify instructional needs and monitor progress.
- Develop individualized lesson plans based on each student's strengths, challenges, and current skill level.
- Maintain accurate lesson notes, assessment records, and progress documentation.
- Collaborate regularly with the founder to discuss student progress, instructional strategies, lesson planning, and next steps.
- Be willing to share teaching resources, lesson ideas, and professional knowledge to support a collaborative team environment.
- Communicate professionally with families and collaborate with the Diverse Learners Tutoring team.
- Prepare formal progress reports three times per year, with additional compensation for substantive reporting and meetings.

Required Qualifications

- Completed formal Orton–Gillingham training, including a supervised practicum with observed teaching and feedback.
- Demonstrated experience providing individualized structured literacy intervention to students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.
- Experience explicitly teaching morphology, including prefixes, suffixes, roots, and advanced word analysis.
- Strong understanding of English orthography, phonology, syllable structure, and spelling conventions.
- Experience teaching multisyllabic decoding and spelling to upper-elementary or secondary students.
- Ability to plan diagnostic and prescriptive lessons based on ongoing student performance.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to share knowledge, teaching strategies, and resources with other educators.
- Openness to feedback, professional discussions, and ongoing collaboration on student programming.
- Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
- Ability to complete the required criminal record screening for working with children.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor of Education, Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Literacy,

or a related field.
- OG certification or practitioner-level training through a recognized organization.
- Experience working as a learning support teacher, resource teacher, literacy interventionist, or educational therapist.
- Experience with literacy assessments.
- Experience providing explicit writing instruction, including sentence structure, sentence expansion, paragraph development, essay organization, and written expression.
- Familiarity with evidence-based writing instruction approaches
- Familiarity with reading comprehension and the needs of students with dyslexia and dysgraphia.
- Experience supporting students in Grades 5–12.

Scheduling and Work Arrangements

- Flexible, part time independent contractor opportunities.
- Student assignments are based on tutor expertise, availability, and geographic location.
- We aim to group in-person students within a reasonable travel radius to minimize unnecessary commuting.
- Online tutoring opportunities may be available depending on student needs.
- Student referrals are offered based on availability and suitability; a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed.

Compensation

- $55–$70 per tutoring hour, depending on training and experience.
- Additional compensation for substantive progress reports, assessments, and scheduled meetings, as agreed upon.
