Location:
Project Site (TBD) Employment Type: Full-Time The Chance At Smith and Long, precision is everything. Before mechanical systems are installed, before electrical infrastructure is energized, and before projects can progress, the layout must be accurate. We are seeking an experienced Construction Surveyor to support mechanical and electrical construction activities across major commercial, institutional, industrial, and infrastructure projects. This role is critical to ensuring that installations are positioned exactly as designed, minimizing rework, maintaining schedule integrity, and supporting project success from the ground up. The successful candidate will utilize advanced surveying technology, including Total Stations, Prisms, GPS/GNSS equipment, and digital layout systems, to establish control networks, perform field layout, verify installations, and deliver accurate as-built documentation. This is an opportunity for a highly detailed and technically skilled professional who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering, technology, BIM coordination, and construction execution. What We're Looking For: Precision-Obsessed Professional: You understand that millimeters matter. Whether laying out underground utilities, mechanical equipment, electrical infrastructure, or building systems, accuracy is your standard. Field Problem Solver: You thrive in active construction environments and can quickly identify, communicate, and resolve layout discrepancies before they impact project progress. Technology-Driven Surveyor: You are comfortable leveraging modern survey instruments, BIM models, and digital construction tools to improve field productivity and accuracy. Trusted Construction Partner: Project managers, superintendents, VDC teams, and field crews rely on you to provide accurate information that supports successful project execution. Ownership Mentality: You take responsibility for your work, verify your results, and ensure layouts and installations meet required tolerances and project specifications. Your Primary Objectives As a Construction Surveyor, your success will be measured by your ability to provide accurate layout information, maintain survey control, and ensure installed work aligns with design intent. Construction Layout & Field Coordination
· Perform layout and staking for mechanical, electrical, and utility installations.
· Transfer coordinates and design information from drawings and BIM models to the field.
· Provide layout support for equipment locations, duct banks, underground services, raceways, piping systems, supports, and structural components.
· Coordinate layout activities with project management, BIM/VDC teams, superintendents, and field crews.
· Support construction sequencing and installation planning. Survey Control & Verification
· Establish and maintain survey control networks and project benchmarks.
· Verify horizontal and vertical control throughout project execution.
· Confirm installed work complies with specified coordinates, elevations, alignment requirements, and dimensional tolerances.
· Investigate and resolve discrepancies between design documentation and field conditions. As-Built Documentation & Quality Assurance
· Conduct as-built surveys throughout construction.
· Capture and document installed conditions for project records and handover requirements.
· Prepare survey reports, layout records, and quality control documentation.
· Support turnover documentation and project closeout activities.
· Ensure survey data remains accurate, organized, and traceable throughout the project lifecycle. Who You Are Detail-Oriented: You recognize that accurate layout directly impacts safety, quality, productivity, and project profitability. Technically Strong: You possess a strong understanding of coordinate systems, elevations, survey control, and construction practices. Collaborative: You work effectively with engineers, BIM coordinators, project managers, superintendents, and field installation teams. Accountable: You verify your work, maintain meticulous records, and take pride in delivering accurate survey data. Adaptable: You are comfortable working across multiple project environments, including commercial buildings, industrial facilities, institutional campuses, transit systems, and infrastructure projects. Qualifications
· Minimum 3 years of construction surveying experience.
· Proficient with Total Stations, Prisms, GPS/GNSS equipment, and survey data collectors.
