Job Description
In an ever-changing world, it requires creativity and innovation to stay ahead. GHD is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer – Building Performance to lead energy modelling, energy-code consulting and decarbonization studies for new and existing buildings across Canada. This role will help clients improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimize whole-building performance.
- Lead the development of whole-building energy, thermal comfort and indoor air quality models for new and existing buildings, translating design information into reliable simulations and actionable recommendations.
- Provide technical leadership and quality assurance for building-performance studies and energy models, including review of assumptions, inputs, methodologies, calibration and results for accuracy and reasonableness.
- Develop baseline and proposed-design models; quantify energy consumption, peak demand and greenhouse gas emissions; and evaluate savings associated with energy conservation measures.
- Calibrate existing-building models against available utility, metering and operational data, and clearly document data limitations and modelling assumptions.
- Help clients establish energy and carbon-performance targets and develop practical strategies for energy efficiency, controls optimization,
electrification and building decarbonization.
- Act as a technical advisor to clients by presenting modelling results, explaining technical and financial implications, and helping prioritize practical energy and carbon-reduction measures.
- Provide performance-based feedback on HVAC design, system selection, controls and operation. Collaborate with architectural, building-envelope, façade, sustainability, mechanical and electrical teams to optimize integrated designs and support applied research.
- Assess and document compliance with applicable energy codes and standards, and prepare modelling submissions supporting green‑building certification requirements.
- Prepare energy‑code compliance reports and supporting documentation for building permit applications.
- Prepare energy‑efficiency incentive applications and supporting technical calculations on behalf of clients.
- Conduct facility site visits and energy assessments to verify existing conditions, collect equipment and operational data, and identify performance‑improvement opportunities.
- Develop recommendations for facility improvements, including projected energy and carbon savings, cost estimates, implementation considerations and supporting calculations. Assess easy payback and life‑cycle costs to support client decisions.
- Interpret complex specifications,
equipment‑performance characteristics and technical data, documenting assumptions, limitations and their implications for model results.
- Review design drawings, specifications, equipment shop drawings, testing reports, and operation and maintenance documentation, incorporating verified inputs into building‑performance models.
- Analyze utility, metering and building automation data. Undertake sensitivity studies and other building‑performance simulations, such as thermal comfort, daylight or airflow analysis, where appropriate to the project.
- Prepare clear technical reports and client presentations, review modelling deliverables for technical quality, and mentor junior engineers and energy modelers.
- Maintain current knowledge of energy codes, modelling methods, industry best practices and emerging building‑performance technologies.
- Contribute to proposals, scopes of work and fee estimates; coordinate project budgets, schedules and deliverables; and support ongoing client relationships and business development.
What you will bring to the team:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline; a master's degree is an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed in Ontario.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in building energy performance, energy modelling, energy management or energy consulting.
- Demonstrated experience developing and reviewing whole‑building energy models using software such as IES VE, DesignBuilder, eQUEST or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, building envelopes, electrical systems, controls and their interaction with whole‑building energy performance.
- Strong knowled
