Job OverviewLocation:Fort McMurrayDepartment:Legal ServicesPosition Type:Temporary Full TimeContract Duration:Approx. end date December 31, 2026Salary Range:$77,707 – $84,992 (Pay Band D)Schedule:Mon – Fri, 70 bi‑weekly working hours (70 hours bi‑weekly)ResponsibilitiesAdministration– Oversees file management and ensures protocols are followed (nomenclature, file organization, filing documents and e‑mails, locating background documents or precedents, and managing task and litigation diarizations). Prepares first drafts of medium‑complexity documents (contracts, sale agreements, real estate closings, bylaws, and other documents as directed). Prepares files for bylaw prosecutions and appears in Provincial Court representing the Municipality at the direction of the responsible lawyer. Maintains litigation limitation diary and prepares periodic reports on litigation status. Submits documents for registration with agencies such as the Corporate Registry, Land Titles, and the Personal Property Registry. Maintains communication lines with legal firms, courts, government agencies, municipalities, and other stakeholders. Reviews and analyzes records from multiple sources, determines relevance to specific legal issues or files, and proactively brings relevant information to the Director or departmental lawyers. Provides support to the Legal Assistant and Senior Administrative Assistant as required. Other duties as assigned.Research and Implementation– Carries out basic research on statute law and common law (using Lexis Nexus, Quicklaw, Westlaw, CANLii and other sources) and municipal bylaws, policies and procedures, and summarizes results for instructing lawyer.



Prepares information and documentation for both departmental lawyers and external stakeholders.Departmental Coordination– Checks and supports the work of lawyers and legal assistants. Acts in a backup role to the Senior Administrative Assistant and Legal Assistant.Skills & RequirementsExcellent writing and communication skillsAbility to prioritize and work under a tight scheduleIn‑depth knowledge of legal terminology and principlesAbility to analyse legal documents for accuracyAttention to detail and accuracyDemonstrated high degree of professionalism, discretion, confidentiality and independenceDetail‑oriented individualStrong listening, communication, interpersonal and organisational skillsFlexibility to manage a broad range of complex activities and deadlinesAbility to secure a Commissioner of Oaths certificateExtensive knowledge in Microsoft OfficeEducationDiploma in Office Administration, Legal Administration, or related post‑secondary courses, and/or a two‑year Paralegal Associates Degree and/or accredited Legal Education Program.ExperienceFive (5) years with a Diploma or three (3) years with a Degree of related work experience in a highly confidential setting, preferably a legal office.Experience working in a public sector environment with unionised and non‑unionised employees considered an asset.Other RequirementsCriminal Record CheckClass Five (5) Driver’s Licence is an asset.SafetyAs an employee of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the incumbent is responsible for and accountable for working in accordance with the Health and Safety Directive.
