About the role
Orion Engineering is hiring an Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer to participate in the design of foundations and small industrial structures for energy mining clients. Much of the current work is at an operating underground mine in northern Saskatchewan: pad foundations, mine ventilation foundations, civil/structural work within the mill, and concrete repair and assessment work in various facilities. You will own designs from the design basis through stamped issued-for-construction drawings, working directly with client engineers, equipment vendors and contractors. The role reports to the Civil/Structural Department Lead and includes occasional site visits.
Key responsibilities
- Design reinforced concrete foundations for industrial and mining facilities: spread footings, mats and pads, tank perimeter (ring) walls, equipment foundations, and foundations for rotating equipment such as mine ventilation fans.
- Design for cold-climate conditions, including deep frost penetration (3+ m), frost-heave mitigation, excavation to bedrock and engineered structural fill.
- Interpret geotechnical reports and translate bearing, frost and fill recommendations into foundation design and construction notes.
- Design anchor bolts, embedments and grout for equipment and steel skids, and check vendor reaction loads.
- Design secondary containment pads, impermeable liner details, spill-containment grading and vehicle collision protection (bollards, lock-block barriers).
- Design light structural steel: access platforms, stairs, guardrails and pipe supports to NBCC Part 4 and CSA S16.
- Prepare Design Basis Memoranda and applicable code reviews (NBCC, National Fire Code, provincial mine and OHS regulations).
- Produce and check calculations and drawings through IFR, IFA and IFC issues; respond to client review markups and contractor RFIs.
- Assess existing concrete and steel (cracked grout, grating, structural condition) and write field instructions and repair recommendations.
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical and instrumentation leads and with equipment vendors on interfaces and loads.
- Support the Engineering Manager with scope definition, hour estimates and schedule for small to mid-size projects. Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- P.
Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or EIT with registration expected within 12 months; willingness to register with APEGS (Saskatchewan).
- 5 to 10 years of civil/structural design experience, mostly in industrial, mining, oil and gas, or heavy civil work.
- Demonstrated foundation design
experience:
you can show at least three foundation packages (footings, pads, tank or equipment foundations) you designed and took to IFC.
- Working knowledge of NBCC 2020, CSA A23.1/A23.2, CSA A23.3 (including anchorage) and CSA S16.
- Experience designing for frost, cold climates and variable ground conditions, and using geotechnical reports in design.
- Proficiency with structural analysis and design software (e.g. RISA, STAAD.
Pro, SECURE,
spColumn or equivalent) and the ability to review AutoCAD drawings.
- Clear technical writing: calculation packages, design basis memos and field instructions.
- Able to travel to remote mine sites for short visits. Nice to have
- Fuel or flammable-liquid storage facilities: National Fire Code of Canada, CAN/ULC-S601 / S663, secondary containment and spill control.
- Dynamic or vibrating-machinery foundations (fans, compressors, pumps).
- Mine ventilation infrastructure, such as fresh air and return air raise collars.
- Saskatchewan or BC mining regulations and working on operating mine sites.
- Concrete repair, grout and existing-structure condition assessment.
- Experience with small, fast-turnaround projects for owner-operators, from estimate to IFC.
What we offer
- Salary range: $95,000 – $115,000 per year, based on experience.
- Ownership of real projects from design basis to stamped drawings, with direct client contact.
- Mentorship from senior engineers and support toward P.
Eng. and APEGS registration.
- Professional development and association dues support.
