Own API gateways, routing, authentication, and traffic controls at Perplexity, supporting high-traffic interfaces for developers and agents.
This infrastructure-focused engineering role centers on the platform layers behind Perplexity's APIs. You will build and operate gateways, reverse proxies, and routing systems while improving reliability, throughput, and observability. The work includes distributed systems, security, rate limiting, quotas, and heterogeneous upstream services.
Key Responsibilities: Own authentication and authorization across API gateway layers
Implement rate limiting, quotas, traffic shaping, and metering
Route requests across heterogeneous upstream services
Harden security and reliability across compute environments




Partner with infrastructure teams on networking and secrets
Requirements: Five-plus years building backend platforms or infrastructure
Experience with Python, Go, or Rust
Hands-on API gateway or reverse proxy experience
Understanding of authentication patterns and idempotency
Experience with per-request observability and performance tuning
Apply gateway engineering, traffic management, and reliability expertise to Perplexity's mission-critical API infrastructure.
