Lead Major Heavy Civil Operations in Alberta's Oil Sands

Otter Wise Talent Solutions is recruiting an accomplished General Superintendent – Oil Sands / Mining & Heavy Civil for a permanent senior field leadership opportunity supporting a significant portfolio of active and upcoming work in the Fort McMurray oil sands.

This is an opportunity for a career heavy civil and mining field leader who has progressed beyond responsibility for a single project or construction scope and is ready to lead across multiple Superintendents, work fronts, crews and major equipment-intensive operations.

You will have significant operational responsibility for how field resources are deployed — establishing priorities, allocating manpower and heavy equipment, supporting Superintendents, resolving operational constraints and ensuring multiple construction scopes continue moving safely and productively.

This is not a Project Manager position and it is not a traditional single-project Superintendent role.

We are looking for someone who has already been operating at a senior field leadership level within mining, oil sands and major heavy civil construction.

The Opportunity

The work is performed within an active oil sands/mining environment and includes major, equipment-intensive construction such as:

- Major earthworks and mass excavation
- Overburden and mine development
- Mine progression and mine maintenance
- Shovel and haul-truck operations
- Heavy-equipment production
- Mine roads and haul roads
- Shovel work areas and site development
- Reclamation
- Pond and water-management construction
- Dewatering, ditches and sumps
- Spillways and overflow systems
- HDPE and environmental construction

There is a strong pipeline of current and anticipated work, making this a long-term permanent leadership opportunity rather than a short-term project assignment.

What You'll Lead

As General Superintendent, you will provide senior field and operational leadership across multiple heavy civil and mining construction scopes.

You will:

- Lead, coach and provide direction to multiple Superintendents and senior field leaders
- Oversee multiple active construction work fronts simultaneously
- Establish field priorities across mining and heavy civil operations
- Allocate manpower, heavy equipment and construction resources between competing work fronts
- Lead major earthworks and equipment-intensive construction operations
- Monitor production, productivity, schedule, cost and overall field performance
- Support mine progression and construction planning
- Forecast manpower, equipment and operational requirements
- Identify constraints, risks and production issues before they impact execution
- Support Superintendents in resolving field and operational challenges
- Coordinate with Project Management, Operations, Engineering, Planning and Scheduling
- Maintain strong owner/client and stakeholder relationships
- Drive consistent safety leadership across field operations
- Ensure environmental, quality, contractual and construction standards are maintained

The Experience We're Looking For

This is a specialized search.

We're looking for a senior field leader who can demonstrate direct accountability for large, equipment-intensive operations within mining and/or the oil sands.

You should bring:

- Approximately 15+ years of progressive heavy civil construction experience
- Significant senior Superintendent-level field leadership experience
- Substantial mining and/or oil sands construction experience
- Experience working within an active mine or oil sands operating environment
- Demonstrated leadership of multiple Superintendents or equivalent senior field leaders
- Responsibility for multiple concurrent work fronts or major construction scopes
- Significant major earthworks and heavy-equipment operations experience
- Experience leading large field organizations
- Strong manpower, equipment and production-planning capability
- Accountability for safety, production, quality, schedule and cost
- Strong operational decision-making and problem-solving capability

Your background should include significant exposure to several of the following:

Mass excavation | Overburden | Mine development | Mine progression | Mine maintenance | Shovel and haul-truck operations | Heavy-equipment production | Haul roads | Major grading | Site development | Reclamation | Pond construction | Water management | Dewatering | Environmental construction

We're Interested in the Scale You've Personally Led

Titles and project values only tell part of the story.

We're particularly interested in understanding the actual scale of the field operations you have personally been accountable for, including:

- Number of Superintendents or senior field leaders reporting to you
- Overall field workforce under your responsibility
- Number of crews and simultaneous work fronts
- Heavy-equipment fleet under your area of responsibility
- Major earthworks and production activities
- Manpower and equipment allocation across competing priorities
- Direct involvement in mine development, progression and field execution

Relevant Leadership Backgrounds

Current or previous titles may include:

- General Superintendent – Mining
- General Superintendent – Heavy Civil
- Area Superintendent – Mining / Earthworks
- Senior Superintendent – Mining
- Mining Superintendent
- Mine Construction Superintendent
- Earthworks Superintendent
- Senior Heavy Civil Superintendent
- Construction Superintendent – Mining
- Construction Manager – Mining / Heavy Civil

You do not need to currently hold the title of General Superintendent.

If your organization uses a different title but you are already leading multiple Superintendents, major equipment-intensive operations and multiple work fronts at this level, we want to hear from you.

Important Fit for This Search

Because of the seniority and specialization of this position, candidates whose backgrounds are primarily in Project Management, municipal infrastructure, utilities, pipeline, commercial construction or general industrial construction without substantial mining/heavy civil field operations experience are unlikely to be the right fit.

Similarly, managing a large project or workforce is not enough on its own.

We need someone who can demonstrate direct senior field leadership over multiple Superintendents,

major earthworks/heavy-equipment operations and concurrent work fronts within a mining or oil sands environment.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should also bring:

- Robust construction planning and scheduling capability
- Manpower and equipment planning experience
- Production and operational-performance awareness
- Cost-control experience
- Strong safety leadership
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and contract documents
- Strong client and stakeholder communication skills
- Valid driver's licence
- Ability to meet site pre-access requirements, including drug and alcohol testing

A Construction or Technical Diploma, C.E.T., Engineering Degree, trade background or comparable combination of technical education and extensive construction experience is preferred.

CSTS and OSSA training are required.

Compensation & Rotation

Base Salary: $180,000–$200,000+ per year, with flexibility for exceptional experience
Rotation: 14 days on / 7 days off
FIFO: Company-paid flights from Edmonton and Calgary
Camp: Accommodations and meals provided while on rotation
DIDO: Available for candidates residing in the Fort McMurray area
Employment: Full-Time, Permanent
Start: ASAP

Some rotation flexibility may be considered for an exceptional candidate.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

For a senior Superintendent who has built their career in mining, major earthworks and equipment-intensive field operations, this is an opportunity to take the next step into broader operational leadership.

Rather than being responsible for one isolated project, you'll have visibility and influence across multiple Superintendents, crews, work fronts and construction resources supporting a substantial portfolio of oil sands work.

You'll join an organization with a strong pipeline of current and anticipated projects, providing the opportunity for long-term stability, meaningful operational authority and continued senior leadership growth in the Fort McMurray oil sands.
