Hardware Engineer – Analog & Digital Design
Electrical Measurement Instruments | Prescott, Ontario |
Measurements International (MI) is looking for a Hardware Engineer to join our development team and help build the electronics that power our precision electrical measurement instruments. You'll work alongside experienced engineers on real products used by national measurement institutes and calibration labs around the world.
About Measurements International
Measurements International is a cutting-edge technology company dedicated to providing our customers with the highest-quality products, using state-of-the-art technology to deliver the highest accuracy in electrical calibration. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Hardware Engineer with strong expertise in both analog and digital circuit design to join our dynamic team and contribute to our ongoing research and development efforts. Our work supports the future of electrical measurement, from quantum-based electrical standards to the precise power and energy measurements that a modern smart grid and the global shift to electrification depend on.
About the Role
As a Hardware Engineer at Measurements International, you will be a key member of our research and development team, responsible for designing, developing, and testing high-precision measurement instruments. You will take circuit designs from concept through schematic, PCB layout, prototyping, and production support, working closely with our engineers and technicians to deliver instruments with exceptional accuracy and stability. You'll help develop instruments that link everyday electrical measurements to quantum standards and that support accurate power, energy, and power-quality measurement for smart grid, renewable energy, and electrification applications.
What You'll Do
- Analog Design: Design low-noise, high-precision analog circuits, including signal conditioning, amplifiers, filters, voltage references, ADC/DAC front ends, and power supplies.
- Digital Design: Design digital circuits and subsystems,
including microcontroller- and FPGA-based control, data acquisition, and communication interfaces (e.g., SPI, I²C, UART, USB, Ethernet).
- Schematic & PCB: Create schematics, select components, and guide PCB layout to ensure signal integrity, proper grounding and shielding, and EMC performance on mixed-signal boards.
- Prototyping & Testing: Build, debug, and characterize prototypes; plan and run verification tests to confirm accuracy, noise, drift, and reliability.
- Firmware Support: Write or support embedded firmware (C/C++) for board bring-up, testing, and instrument control.
- Emerging Applications: Contribute to instrument development for quantum metrology (e.g., Josephson voltage and quantum Hall resistance standards), smart grid power and energy measurement, and electrification (e.g., EV charging, renewable energy, and battery systems).
- Documentation: Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, test reports, and manuals.
- Problem Solving: Troubleshoot hardware issues in development and production, proposing effective solutions and design improvements.
- Stay Current: Stay updated on new components, emerging technologies, and best practices in analog, digital, and mixed-signal design.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a closely related field.
- Proven hands-on experience designing both analog and digital hardware, ideally in precision measurement, instrumentation, or test equipment.
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, KiCad) and circuit simulation (e.g., SPICE/LTspice).
- Experience with microcontrollers and/or FPGAs, and embedded programming in C/C++.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, precision multimeters, spectrum analyzers, power supplies) and prototyping.
- Solid understanding of noise, grounding, EMC, and signal-integrity considerations in mixed-signal design.
- Familiarity with quantum electrical standards, power and energy metering, power quality, or high-voltage/high-current measurement for smart grid and electrification applications is a strong asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work independently and meet project deadlines
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and benefits package.
- Chance to work on cutting-edge projects in quantum metrology, smart grid, and electrification.
- Opportunities to travel to scientific conferences and industry trade shows to present our work, meet customers, and stay connected with the measurement community.
- Company-funded courses and training related to your role, to help you continue building your technical skills.
- Career growth and development opportunities.
- Collaborative and innovative work environment.
