Junior Accountant

At Smith and Long, financial accuracy isn't just an accounting function. It's the foundation that supports every project, every employee, and every client relationship across our organization.

We're looking for a Junior Accountant who is eager to build a strong accounting career while taking ownership of some of the most important financial activities in the business: cash collections, customer account management, bank reconciliations, and general accounting support. This isn't a back-office data entry role. This is a hands-on position where you'll actively contribute to our cash flow, strengthen customer relationships, and gain exposure to the day-to-day operations of a large and growing organization.

If you're organized, persistent, detail-oriented, and motivated to learn, this is an opportunity to develop into a highly skilled accounting professional within a company that values growth, accountability, and excellence.

What We're Looking For:

Collection Champion- You don't avoid difficult conversations. You're comfortable following up with customers regarding outstanding invoices and take pride in helping the company maintain strong cash flow while preserving positive relationships.

Detail-Driven Accountant- You understand that every receipt, journal entry, and reconciliation matters. Accuracy is second nature, and you enjoy identifying discrepancies before they become problems.

Extreme Ownership- You take responsibility for assigned accounts and tasks. When something requires follow-up, you see it through to completion rather than waiting for someone else to resolve it.

Problem Solver- When a payment doesn't match an invoice or a bank transaction doesn't reconcile, you're curious enough to investigate and persistent enough to find the solution.

Growth-Oriented Professional- You're looking for more than just a job. You want to develop your accounting skills, expand your responsibilities, and build a long-term career in finance.

Your Primary Objectives: As a Junior Accountant, your success will be measured by your ability to maintain financial accuracy while supporting the organization's cash flow and accounting operations.

Cash Collection Excellence:

· Accurately apply and post customer cash receipts.

· Monitor outstanding accounts receivable balances.

· Professionally follow up with customers regarding overdue invoices and outstanding payments.

· Maintain detailed records of collection efforts, commitments, and account activity.

· Assist in resolving customer account discrepancies and payment allocation issues.

Bank Reconciliation Accuracy:

· Perform timely bank reconciliations for assigned accounts.

· Investigate and resolve outstanding reconciling items.

· Ensure cash transactions are accurately recorded in the general ledger.

· Identify and follow up on unusual transactions, deposits, or withdrawals.

Accounting Execution:

· Prepare and post journal entries and overhead allocations.

· Support month-end close activities.

· Review account balances for accuracy and completeness.

· Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for management reporting.

· Assist the Finance team with various accounting and administrative functions as required.

Who You Are

Persistent and Professional - You understand that collections require consistency. You're comfortable communicating professionally with customers while maintaining a positive and respectful approach.

Organized Multitasker - You can efficiently balance collection activities, reconciliations, journal entries, and daily priorities without losing attention to detail.

Financially Curious - You want to understand the "why" behind transactions and enjoy learning how accounting supports broader business operations.

Strong Communicator - You can confidently communicate with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders while maintaining professionalism at all times.

Team Player - You're willing to jump in where needed and support the Finance team to help ensure operational success.

Qualifications

· College diploma or university degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.

· 0-2 years of accounting or finance experience.

· New graduates with relevant education, internships,

or co-op experience are encouraged to apply.

· Understanding of fundamental accounting principles, including debits, credits, and account reconciliations.

· Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

· Excellent organizational and attention-to-detail abilities.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· Comfortable communicating directly with customers regarding outstanding balances.

· Previous ERP or accounting system experience is considered an asset.

· Experience within construction, contracting, or project-based environments is considered an asset.

What's In It For You?

· Exposure to multiple areas of accounting and finance.

· Mentorship and development opportunities within an experienced Finance team.

· Career growth opportunities as responsibilities expand.

· Comprehensive health and dental benefits.

· RRSP matching program.

· Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

· Employee recognition programs and company events.

· The opportunity to build a long-term career with one of Canada's leading electrical and mechanical contractors.

Salary: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 Annually
