ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Layout Carpenter translates construction drawings and established survey control into accurate field layout for Blackrete's concrete work using a total station.

Accuracy is critical. The Layout Carpenter verifies dimensions and elevations before work proceeds, identifies discrepancies early, communicates required information to the Superintendent and Foreman, and supports field crews with clear, reliable layout throughout each stage of construction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

- Set up and operate a total station and data collector for day-to-day construction layout.

- Establish, transfer, verify, and protect horizontal and vertical control points and benchmarks from survey control.
- Lay out footings, foundation walls, columns, cores, slab edges, openings, blockouts, embeds, anchor bolts, curbs, and other concrete elements.
- Establish gridlines, offsets, reference lines, control lines, and working points for formwork and concrete crews.
- Transfer and verify elevations for footings, walls, columns, slabs, steps, curbs, and other formed concrete.
- Check formwork before concrete placement for line, grade, dimensions, elevations, and location.
- Read and interpret structural, architectural, civil, and shop drawings and confirm current revisions before layout.
- Calculate and verify dimensions, offsets, coordinates, and elevations required to complete layout.
- Identify drawing conflicts, missing dimensions, control discrepancies, or constructability issues and report them before work proceeds.
- Coordinate daily layout priorities with the Superintendent and Foreman so crews have points, lines, and elevations ahead of planned work.
- Re-check critical layout and control following formwork installation, excavation, backfill, or other activity that may disturb control.
- Perform field verification and as-built checks of completed concrete elements when required.
- Maintain clear layout records, field notes, point files, and marked-up drawings for reference and turnover.
- Maintain the total station, tripod, prisms, data collector, batteries,

and accessories in good working order and complete routine setup checks.
- Work safely around excavations, formwork, leading edges, equipment, and active concrete operations in accordance with WorkSafeBC and the Company Safety Manual.
- Assist with carpentry, formwork, and other field work when layout demands permit while keeping layout priorities on schedule.
